Rivians charging was the main reason I sold mine, too slow. If the range was better it would be more acceptable, but waiting 40 minutes to go from 10-80% to be able totravel 200 miles at highway speed is not it. I understand this isnt a big deal for some, and it isnt a huge deal for a one stop trip, but for a long journey it was unacceptable to me. Charger availability and access was never an issue and still isnt with my other evs

I’m one of those that don’t mind and actually look forward to stops that let me stretch my legs. However, I do notice a definite difference in charging curves between my R1T and Audi eTron (also 400v). And I agree how the R1T charges can be frustrating. While the R1T has a higher max charging speed (~200kwh) it starts dropping off around 40-50% and usually does about 130 kwh or lesS. My Audi, however, will maintain its max (~150kwh) almost all the way to 80%. The R1T also seems to be more affected by hot temperatures that throttle speed. I suspect some of this is because Audi kept more of the battery top end unusable, which keeps charging more in the flat part of the curve. Plus Audi may have a better cooling system.

On your next trip I’d suggest trying a different strategy.

There are a lot of chargers out there now, I’ve taken several trips >7k miles in my R1S and my older Tesla that has a max charge rate around 122 kWh. My strategy is to map out the stretches between chargers to be less than 120 miles most of my charge stops are well under 15 minutes as I stay under 65% on the battery keeping it in the faster rates. This still gives me close to 2 hours of driving between stops.

Might not work for everyone but works great for me, just enough time on the stops to go to the restroom and stretch my legs.

That should be the norm-every stop with the family or with dogs is 20 minutes, but in that time you aren't even getting 100 miles of charge added with a rivian or really any 400v car. If you want stop longer or drive shorter distances between stops thats your prerogative.

IDK how fast you're going, but 80 or under, you're getting more than 200 miles at 80%.

All vehicles qualified for the subsidy if leased. Higher the vehicle price, higher the percent of leased vehicles. Would not surprise me if majority of R1 sales are lease sales.

As of early 2025, leasing accounted for over 50% of new electric vehicle transactions. Overall, leasing has seen a resurgence, with about 25% of total vehicle sales in the U.S. being leases.

Correct, after 40 minutes of charging. The charge time was my complaint. Going from 10 to 80% that gives you 70% of battery to use which is approximately 94kwhs on my LE quad(that I no longer have) at best I would get 2miles per kwh which would be about 200 miles of highway after 40 minutes of charging

The gravity looks ok, but the Cayenne ev will be better for similar price, I also work for Porsche. And while wholly unnecessary the Cayenne can wireless charge at home.

I’ve heard that the Porsche EVs are roadtripping beasts (800V architecture and 350kW charging speed with an excellent curve). Lease or buy used in a few years and save a ton of money, too.

I think battery tech including range, charging speed, and cost will continue to improve well into the future, which is why 50% of EVs are leased.

I agree. They are definitely that, the cayenne takes the next step for sure. My plan is to lease(get 20% off msrp as an employee) then immediately refinance to purchase and keep it as the family car.

VW Group is cutting back on its EV investments - looks like their Scout brand is going to focus on the Harvester EREV powertrain with pure BEVs on hold. This does not bode well for Rivian, who has an ongoing partnership with VW and has benefitted from large cash infusions from them in the past. Not to mention GM, Ford and others who are cutting back as well.

A little off topic but our EV9 has had zero problems, approaching 2 years and 35k miles. UI is still terrible and my Rivian is much more fun to drive. But it’s been a solid vehicle for us.
I feel like I got a bad draw in the Rivian lottery and a good draw in the Kia lottery. I haven’t posted about it in detail but my truck has been problematic from the beginning. This would be my second replacement for failing front dampers, along with replaced rear drive unit, most air suspension components, ASM module, subframe, and HV battery this summer. If I thought I was just facing a one-time expensive repair bill I would probably bite the bullet, but based on my history I think it would be a lot of continued expense out of warranty. Mostly just makes me sad. I love the truck.

FWIW, my 2023 R1S has had zero problems to date as well, fingers crossed

I just saw an article on VW saying they have an $11B cash shortage... This does not look good at all.
