My day-two review of the Comma 3X Self Driving Camera for Gen1 R1- Promising, but not ready for laymen.

Congrats on getting it up and running! So, the Offroad terminology is a bit confusing, especially for us Rivian owners who have a very specific idea of what Offroad means.

Basically, in the context of openpilot, Offroad means not driving. It just puts the Comma in a state where it thinks you're not on the road driving - thus Offroad.

If you want access to your files the easiest way is to get your Connect.comma.ai account set up. You can upload your logs and videos to connect, then share or download them. And you can also use them to generate clips with the UI overlay like this:



Honestly it's not great as a dashcam, but it can get the job done in a pinch.

Also a couple of more questions if you don't mind:

1) what does the top right hand corner icon mean in the driving screen. When I press it the logo changes from "comma ai" logo to some other logo and the camera angle seems to change. Is this just a visual thing, or is it changing some driving setting?

2) I tried to update my driving model, currently Down To Drive -- at first, I saw the option to "select" a different model, but when I clicked it, the screen somehow timed out before I had chance to select a new one, and now the "select" option is grayed out.

Clicking the Refresh Model List doesn't seem to do anything [I get menu that it's refreshing, but nothing happens...]

Any advice? I'd like to try out TR14 or TR16

EDIT: Re #2 -- looks like the 3x was not in the right "mode" [perhaps it was in driving mode, and thus the model update was not available]. After sitting around the car for a while in P, it seems to have flipped back to non-driving mode where I was able to select a driving model -- downloadin the Tomb Raider 16 right now... [not sure if that's a good or bad idea...]

I believe you have to disengage OP by tapping the brakes then put the unit it off-road mode in order to change models.

Just wanted to say I got my comma installed yesterday. Thanks to @gerrylum and @LivingInKaos for all their help. Definitely a steep learning curve since there isn’t a manual to understand what all the settings do. There are so many models to try too. Some models behave worse than driver+ in my opinion. Definitely a lot to wade through. Thankfully Gerry has a great website to help beginners not get so overwhelmed. So far I’m liking the hands free and the MADS mode.

I think you answered #2 on your own, but for question 1, I think you're switching from "Chill mode" to "Experimental mode" when you press the logo.

@gerrylum Not sure how I missed it, but your website, with the link in your signature is fantastic for Rivian focused info on Comma! Wish I had noticed it earlier. Will definitely bookmark and reference for future info.

I do! It's my favorite so far, though I haven't tried any of the ones released this week.

There's no reason to change any settings after switching models. All the same settings should still apply.

Hi Gerry. I womder if you have any thoughts on this. I finally am getting around to switching models today. When I went In to do so, it seems to indicate that I am already on “Down to Ride”, but there are no versions. Oddly, I did not make this change. This is what shows up after I updated Rivian software today:

Yeah, Down to Ride v6 is the current default model. If you were on the previous default model, it's changed your default when you updated.

By the way, all the models are stored in a folder structure now so all the Down to Ride models are in the Down to Ride folder, Simple Plan Models in the Simple Plan folder, etc.
