I couldn't help but think of a Rivian-specific version of "The Wheels on the Bus"

🎵🎵🎵
The wheels on the left go back back back...
The wheels on the right go front front front...
🎵🎵🎵

Idk, "Available on the R1T and R1S :)" seems pretty official coming from @rivianofficial

Rivian R1T R1S R1 Quad Launches July 8th with TANK TURN / KICK TURN! screenshot_20250702-105625-jpg
That's the one video they posted in December 2019, which was two years before they shipped a single customer vehicle.

It was at the time they filed for a trademark for "tank turn", which meant they had to demonstrate actual "intent to use" - you can't just trademark every word or phrase in the dictionary to prevent others from using it, you actually have to be using it yourself or have some actual evidence to tie the phrase to a concrete feature/product/service/etc. in context. They also filed a patent application for K-turn at the time, so clearly one was patentable and the other was not, and clearly they were working on securing their intellectual property at a time of increasing competition as they were getting closer to actual production.

Tank turn was "officially" delayed in September 2021. But even before then, Rivian rarely talked about the feature and when they did (in interviews, etc.) they described how hard it was to do "right" and how they were concerned about damage to trails and use in the wrong context. Tank turn never appeared on the official list of vehicle features or options once the official vehicle descriptions were revealed in November 2020. And the feature was "officially" killed before a single customer vehicle was sold or shipped.

Rivian has always had the "official" disclaimer of "Options, specs and pricing may change as we approach production" (like ever single other car manufacturer has done this entire century) - that was even on the pre-order agreement you signed. Yet people still think they were made "promises" when in actuality Rivian was simply sharing what they knew at the time. Not everything made it to production, and a lot of stuff that was never even mentioned DID make it to production.

So although the knowledge that Rivian was working on this feature may have encouraged some to place a pre-order (which BTW was explicitly NOT a deposit on an actual vehicle, and didn't guarantee that Rivian would ever produce a vehicle or would ever sell you one), no one actually placed an order for an actual vehicle which included this feature. If that is what you thought you were getting when you ordered the vehicle then you knew or should have known you were wrong - self-delusion and believing in influencer hype is not on Rivian, it's on you.

So yeah, complain about all the features that were on the concept vehicle that never made it to production if you want, like that's surprising? Like you never suspected that what was actually produced would be different in many ways from what was first seen in 2018? Are you also going to complain about all those surprise extras that Rivian gave us as part of the base price, that they never "promised" in the first place?

This new "kick turn" feature appears to address and resolve many of the concerns that Rivian raised about the original tank turn - it's not like they've had tank turn working for 4 years and just decided to release it - this is a highly developed successor to what we first got just a small glimpse of in 2019.

Full disclosure: I'd never use tank turn cuz my half-shafts are loud enough, even if they gave it to us Gen 1ers. But I wish they'd stop advertising things that never materialize...like tank turn and the original camp kitchen. More recently? The fold flat front seats on the R2, and then they rug-pulled that too. Just wait until the feature or option is 100% going to baked into the product. I know, I know....just whining.

They didn't say you were going to get it. And even if they did, you only get what you purchased, not some future promise that is not legally binding.

In fact, I don't think they have any obligation to continuously improve our trucks with OTA updates. I love the fact the are doing it, but they are not required to do it. Not at all. They are only obligated to honor the warranty and fix the items covered by the warranty.

Yah I don't either. Same goes for autonomy for gen 1 (I don't have Tesla-envy-itis).

It sounds like some mental gymnastics to me. I would argue that Rivian is one of the few companies who tries to stick to their word and promoted materials. Like pricing. We can call a spade a spade and still love the product. They said we'd get tank turn and we didn't.

We can call a spade a spade and stop giving Rivian more credit than they are due. They will cut and revoke any feature they think they can get away with... OGs have a hard time keeping track of all the features that have been cut. Remember when they didn't give guages or motor temps to Dual Motor trucks? And said it was an error only AFTER the community called them on it? And when they tried to not deliver Blind Spot Cam to Gen 1 until the community spoke up?

As for early pricing, Rivian didn't honor it for purely altruistic reasons. They nearly had an internal revolt (several dozen threatened to quit and several did, and this was early days with low staffing) and customers were literally burning their pre-order letters... They did it to save face.

My Guide back then told me they even offered to fund an internal pool where employees could donate to cover the excess cost for really early customers. That's the only reason I didn't cancel back then... The people at Rivian are PHENOMENAL people. But business is business in the end.
