Own a Gen 1 and disappointed that D+ is as far as your going to get for an ADAS system? There is an option for those willing - Comma 3x with openpilot is currently not on sale, but still a great value if you're considering upgrading to a Gen 2 just for the added adas capabilities.

What is Comma 3x? It's a 3rd party adas system that plugs into the vehicle's current system and provides hands free turning and adaptive cruise on ANY road (paved or not). The system has been ported to a great number of vehicles and recently Gen 1 Rivians were added to that list. There are still improvements happening, but the current state is well beyond the stock D+ capabilities. See Gerry's video linked in the following comment.

If you are interested, go to the website and check it out. This basically makes it so you get a free harness. If you have more than one capable vehicle, you can use one Comma and transfer it between vehicles with their specific harnesses.

There are a few threads on RF regarding Comma, there's also the Comma discord. Also many posts on X and other socials. I'll post a link to a trail I did letting Comma do the steering below as well, just to show some of the cabability.

I'm surprised no comments or questions here yet. I have over 9100 miles of assisted driving and can answer questions. I may not have all the answers, but @gerrylum is listening here as well. I'm sure between the two of us we can fill you in. Gerry also has a bunch of great YouTube content. Very worth while going to check it out and subscribe to stay informed !

Why don't you wanna drive your own vehicle?

I do, but there are times where a break is very nice on long trips. Like, driving straight thru from the Willamette Valley down to San Diego, being able to keep your hands off the wheel is actually very relaxing. Great for the bloodflow :p . I only showed the offroad thing to show capability. The only use I ever see there is if you're out by yourself and get hurt, you can maybe make it out to where others can reach/see you easier without as much "driving".

Rivian R1T R1S (Ended) Comma 3x Sale for $899 1000004715

Is there a very basic Barney style guide to setting it up, wiring, programming, etc? Something that doesn't require Discord or 5 different videos/links?

I'm very curious, and 20% off has me ready to click the button, but it seems somewhat complicated to get set up.

Installing is fairly easy. There is only one part that gives a little headache and that's plugging the harness into the AXM - it's a very tight space. There is a guide that the guys in the Discord have compiled that helps a ton! You can take a look here - Comma 3X Rivian Gen 1 Install Tips and Tricks - Google Docs

Also, watch Gerry's video here -

This has been a question ever since cruise control was invented. As silly then as it is now.

And sadly, I actually prefer to run the pedal myself most of the time. Only on straight stretches do I actually use cruise. So, I'm still driving 50% right?

About ready to pull the trigger - is there still an additional purchase for a harness needed? Or was that a thing on older builds?

There are a couple of options harness wise actually. There is the $99 comma harness, but there is also a harness that the one responsible for the port to Rivian builds for appx $265 HERE but it's a little more money - however supports the person responsible.

There is also an additional harness that allows for longitudinal support (adaptive cruise if you will), steering wheel button control for follow distance and +/- speed, and blind spot monitoring. It is found HERE . There are two versions of that one based on which main harness you purchased.

Not only was he responsible for porting OP to the Rivian, he was the one who created the harness design that Comma is using and he is the one who is primarily driving continual development for the Rivian. Let's just say without Lukas none of this would be possible.

I'm not saying you have to buy his harness, but definitely consider buying his upgrade kit especially since it provides so many benefits beyond what the basic harness alone provides.

It's not too difficult, but you gotta cut through the chaff to get to the good info. I've got one and can assist you with whatever you need, including knuckle Band-Aids...

Do we know if there are tariffs on top of the price?

That is a good price for the Comma, I've been watching the Discord and threads here the last couple months. After an 1800 mile road trip last month, I'm ready to upgrade my Rivian but the install still gives me pause. I've heard a few people having issues, and there's the issue of my clumsy meat hooks fitting to the connectors, but it is tempting...

No one has mentioned any tariffs at this point. I believe the value is low enough that it doesn't apply. There's an $800 rule except for China and Hong Kong. The comma itself ships from the US.
