NACTOY Reveals Finalists for 2022 Awards
Nine finalists for North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year™ awards announced at LA Auto Show

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17, 2021
– The finalists that will compete for the 2022 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year™ (NACTOY) awards were announced today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. This year, NACTOY’s jurors voted on a competitive and diverse field of 23 semifinalists across three categories – Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle – which were announced earlier this year.

The finalists for each category, in alphabetical order, are:

“These nine vehicles represent an unusually excellent and diverse group of finalists,” said NACTOY president Gary Witzenburg. “From new OEMs to vehicles that have created fresh segments in their categories, these vehicles showcase the automotive industry’s current diversification. This year’s finalists also illustrate how many more electric vehicles are becoming available to customers across multiple vehicle types.”

NACTOY’s awards are determined through a series of three votes by a group of 50 automotive journalists from an array of magazines, newspapers, websites, and television and radio stations in the U.S. and Canada. Founded in 1994, the NACTOY awards are the longest-running new vehicle awards not associated with a single outlet.

“The diverse opinions of our jurors bring together a combination of expertise and individual testing regimens to select these nine outstanding finalists,” said NACTOY Vice President Jack R. Nerad. “This results in a comprehensive and thoughtful selection process unique to NACTOY.”

The jurors, who have tested and evaluated eligible new or substantially changed vehicles that launched this year, vote for their choices based on elements including automotive innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction and value.

The jury votes were tallied and audited by Deloitte. The selection of nine finalists is the second-to-last step in the year-long evaluation process for the three awards before the final jury vote and the announcement of the winners in January.

Final voting will take place Dec. 30 – Jan. 5, 2022, and the 2022 NACTOY Car, Truck and Utility of the Year winners will be announced in early January. Details regarding the location and format of this event will be provided soon.

Spanish and French versions of this release will be available on NACTOY’s website. For more information about NACTOY and its history: http://northamericancaroftheyear.org.

Strictly from a versatility point of view I'd have to give it to the Rivian. I don't really know what their criteria is though so ...

It's unfortunate that there is only one truck category as they are all clearly on different levels.

I think the R1T should get it, but wouldn't be surprised in the Maverick as they did a fantastic job on that and it really hits a much larger group of potential purchasers.

Edit: How do juror's vote on safety?

They spent a whole summer doing Rivian promos. They said it was the most impressive new vehicle theyve seen. There is no, zero, none way that its not TOTY. I dont think the R1S will win next year though.

I don't really get the maverick as being something exciting as far as trucks go. It seems like a sedan with a bed. It cuts a lot of corners for cost, it's not innovative in that it's just bringing light trucks back, it's not particularly good for work or truck things, etc. Isn't it just a sedan for people that like the truck form factor?

Meanwhile, the R1T has everything going for it; innovation, power/capabilities, quality, price (in that it's cheaper than less capable trucks), being the first e-truck, etc. The maverick might be decent at getting trucks into non-truck hands, but the R1T might be even better at that.

I think you are right that it is not "innovative" in the sense that it is essentially bringing light trucks back, however innovation is only one category and I think it performs well in some of the others.

"Good for work or truck things" is highly dependent on someones use case and it does all the "truck things" I need besides towing (I'll have an R1S for that).

Here is just one example of why I have a reservation on the Maverick and am excited for the resurgence of light trucks.
Do I want to load the few bales of straw in the back of my LEAF? No that won't fit.
How about my Navigator? Okay I can take the boosters out and put the seats down, but now I have to put a tarp down to contain all the loose straw.
Might as well just hook up the trailer or borrow my dads F-150.

I do enough hauling of small things that are "dirty" that a trailer is typically overkill and putting it in an SUV is, well, dirty.

I'll probably be getting rid of the LEAF for a Maverick and the Navigator for the R1S. I prefer to have 100% electric but the Maverick fits so many small things for our needs even if they aren't seen as "truck things".

Fair enough. I have a love of mini trucks and wish they were a thing in the US, so I kinda get it.

Living in Eastern Africa we used the heck out of mini trucks and would love them around the farm here.

I certainly expect the R1T to win against that competition. Very different types of trucks, though.

Again the Santa Cruz I'm sure they will praise it on such a good offering for a first-time truck made by hyundai, but come on now rivian, this is the first time they've ever made a vehicle, let alone let alone trucks and look at how amazing the product is. The Ford Maverick, I really don't see it. I think it speaks for itself. R1T with a bullet for best North American Truck of 2022, and my pick for Motor Trend truck of the year 2022.
