Has anyone else experienced this? Pretty egregious. HVAC on heater and defog reliably reproduces this issue when it’s relatively cooler outside. Kind of a safety issue as it pops up 5 min into a drive or 30-60 min into a drive. Seemed to happen intermittently last year but now reliably does so. 2023 Gen1 R1S.

Is your AC compressor working? Seems like the system is not getting the moisture out.

Or maybe you have AC turned off when running the heat?

Same issue…and it is an issue.
Work around is to have the HVAC running -~15 mins before departure and make sure your a/c is on (even if temp is high)…that’s what reduces the humidity. Last resort is to crack the windows as long as needed to even out exterior/interior humidity.

Are you recirculating inside air or bringing in outside air? That setting can change the behavior a lot.

Good question, what should it be? I think I’ve had it on both recirculating and fresh intake but will pay closer attention to both.

For best results, recirc should be on so that it's drying the same cabin air repeatedly. One thought - check under your floor mats for wet carpet. There have been reports of AC system leaks where the condensate drips back in the vehicle saturating the carpet. If that happens, it's never removing moisture. Look for condensate, or lack thereof, dripping outside the car to help diagnose the issue.

Mine had some fogging for first time a few weeks ago...in 2.5 years. I didn't think much of it at time, but now seeing this topic...makes me wonder if Rivian changed behavior with one of the recent updates?

I had this happen once on a road trip under very specific conditions -- something like incredibly high humidity, low air temp (40s IIRC), and it was especially an issue if the car was preconditioning for a DC Fast Charger. I assumed that the temp and humidity combination + the preconditioning the battery somehow made the AC compressor not function at 100% for in-cabin climate usage.

I seem to remember if I cancelled the destination to the fast charger (and thus stopped preconditioning) that it went back to normal.

Was very strange. Haven't run into that again.

Well, the Rivian folks called me first thing this morning to get the car in for diagnostics. They lent me a R1S Dual Performance. A little laggy compared to the Quad R1S but fun to drive. Hopefully this issue gets resolved ASAP! Have a trip coming up and many up to the mountain.

Is fogging in the inside or on the outside of the window? I’m assuming inside as outside it is cleanable with wipers.

I have experienced infrequently but defrost mode (that automatically runs the AC compressor) should clear it fairly quickly.

if defrost is not clearing your HVAC may have a problem.

I’m having the exact same issue. Started a year ago and sent to service a couple times. Told me they couldn’t replicate and sent me in my way. Happen almost instantly while driving. Pretty dangerous. Just dropped it off again today. Clearly something wrong with their HVAC system.

Turns out the entire HVAC system needs to be replaced because of some faulty valve causing the problem.

Glad to hear there is a known solution. Thanks for the info. Mine was just out in service today.
