Ouch! AT&T is included in the unlimited plan...guess that becomes a different cost equation. Didn't realize that was still a thing in 2024.
Except, AT&T caps high speed tethering after 30, 40, or 50GB depending on your plan level. Then it goes to a crawl. Completely fine for everyday, but can easily run out when on a road trip. How I know? Kids.

Have a family of four here - the speed caps, but at like 10 megabits/sec once over 30 GB I think - still plenty for a tablet streaming for our kids, but no FPS gaming championships. Rivian's service will most likely do the same.

It is interesting how much of Korea and Japan use cellular band for their home broadband and we still act like we need to rub sticks together for our cellular.

I wish they would let you play your own music via usb. Then I would not have to stream my music.
You can stream from you phone - using blue tooth - I due this currenlty - using my Sirrus XM account, and music library i have on my phone - not sure why this seems like such a big deal - it works well - ?

I am a bit surprised at the reaction to this. Seems like every vehicle we've purchased over the last half dozen years or so came with a free trial subscription to their 'connection services', followed by the need to pay, if you wanted it. Our Jeep, the Audi before that, Porsche, BMW...all used that same model. I always assume these services are just like Sirius/XM, i.e., they give you a free trial and then you have to pony up.

Maybe it's because I've never owned a Tesla, so maybe this is more of a Tesla thing to be surprised that these services aren't forever free?
The difference for me is that nearly every other car manufacturer supports CarPlay so paying for LTE and the manufacturer’s suite of products was very optional. I could get everything I wanted via the phone plan I was already paying for with CP. As we all know, that isn’t Rivian’s model.

Tesla doesn't charge this much and actually provides something that makes it worth it. Sorry Rivian, you completely missed the mark on this one. Way overpriced for what you actually get.

Yeah, but the suite of streaming apps offer a premium listening experience, especially when the "you might like this" algorithm picks some song way off base from your playlist. And besides, who needs proven, robust technology when you can live life on the (silence) edge while driving through dead zones? Plus, Bluetooth sounds better and displaying album art is sooooooo 2011. Change for the sake of change, I say!

Pricing seems fair to me. I'm sure they're burning cash left and right by having kept data free for this long already, so financially (for Rivian) it seems like this should have happened a long time ago. My only major gripe here is locking Casting behind Connect+. I was really looking forward to that for charging stops. Everything else seems reasonable except that – isn't it just sending data from your phone to the car via WiFi? It doesn't even require data usage... Sigh.

Edit: now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I remember reading that the way Casting works is that your phone basically just tells the device that you're casting to the URL, and it pulls it down independently, so I guess that would mean using the car's data plan. Fair I guess, but still annoying for them to tease this "feature" that's not looking like it will make it to the vehicles before the payment plan is required.

Anyone know what is the difference in Alexa Basic and Alexa Connected Commands
My guess is that Alexa will be able to navigate to on command and tell us the weather and internet stuff but won’t be able to open the hood ..trunk etc.
Just a guess though.

This is true. Tesla charges $99 for the year and offers much more: That said, Rivian could change the price structure to match and probably won’t take this “live” until they have at least tested out some offerings (YouTube, chromecast etc for free for a few mos). It’s definitely problematic to move things that have been “included”’ until now (satellite imaging and hotspot) behind the paywall….this is bad business and will piss of existing customers

Yeah, that's my hope as well. Hopefully their pick-up rate at $149/year turns out lower then expected and we get an instant price cut to $99/year and everyone's happy now :)

If Rivian solved all the wasted $$$ from service, they could offer C+ for free. I estimate that they have spent several thousand on rental cars alone for me to fix issues that should have never left the factory. This doesn’t factor in labor and parts costs.

I bought awesome CarpodGo T3 Pro 60 FPS CarPlay screens for both my Rivians and love them. 5G connectivity from my phone, every app imaginable, and no extra fees over what I already pay for cellular. They will save a bunch of money in the long term and the experience is far superior to Rivian. Navigation actually works, for example. Siri isn’t great, but better than Rivian, and Google Assistant is first rate.
