So I bought my R1T used a few months ago. It is a 2022 Adventure Trim with Ocean Coast interior. Recently noticed the wood dash to the left of the steering wheel looks different than the rest of the wood throughout the rest of the interior. While all the other wood is rough/natural with a dark stain the piece to the left of the steering wheel is very smooth and kinda has a lighter sheen to it. Any one seen this before? Grain looks a bit off too. Thinking about adding it to the list for an upcoming service appointment I have.
Smooth Sanded piece:

Rough/Natural example (like all other wood throughout the interior)

They had to replace half my dash due to some blotchy staining when I first got the vehicle. The trim they placed has a completely different shade and pattern. Grey one side black the other. Also 2-3 inch crack has formed since the install. I asked to replace at SC. We’ll see how that goes. Yours (based on the picture / lighting) actually looks pretty consistent in color, I wouldn’t mess with it, anything they do to replace will likely be worse (from my experience).

Wood inlays are nice, because it gives some texture and character. The wood differs from vehicle to vehicle, and in many cases, even the different pieces in the same vehicle. This is cause for celebration and admiration, not complaints.

Appreciate the feedback so far. I guess my main issue is the finish of the wood on the left. It is sanded smooth, like literally smooth as a babies butt and literally every other piece of wood trim (rest of the dash, the phone charger trim, the door trim, the rear headrest trim) is not. And the photos don't do the difference justice due to the flash but all the trim is uniform in color and finish except this one piece (has a white sheen to it) and it sticks out.

I'm really just curious if anyone has encountered any of the trim being sanded smooth before?

Yep. The piece to the left of the wheel is smooth. That's how they built mine.

Maybe the person before you sanded it more?
Yeah, some people have talked about wanting to smooth and finish the wood because they didn't like the rough surface.

Perhaps the person you bought it from tried on that small piece and decided they didn't like it or maybe they learned it was too much effort to do the rest.

It's natural wood as other have mentioned. You bought it used and you knew exactly what you were getting (unlike those that bought them new). This seems very picky and I doubt Rivian is going to replace the woodwork just because you don't like the looks of the vehicle you bought used. If it's over 12,000 miles or 1 year old it's definitely not covered in any case (reference the adjustment warranty).

RIvian uses Ash wood. I've cut tons (literally) of Ash on my property, It looks to me like that piece may be heartwood, which has a different appearance. Personally, I like to see the variations, it's a natural occurence.

Thanks everyone that provided constructive feedback. The wood just seemed out of place to me due to the smoothness but that appears to be normal. All is good.

I’d definitely ask my Guide and SC…
I’m sure they’ll address it

Mine is the same way. I would guess that they arrange the grain of the wood on each piece to get the best use out of the wood or the least likely to split. Because of the way that the grain is on that piece it was probably too rough and needed to be sanded. I like the way mine is.
