I had a brief exchange with Wassym the other day, and he said they were still working through some integrations, but that video streaming would be coming next year.
Anybody want to take bets on whether we'll get Netflix first, or text messaging? ?

This is very lame. I know you can just bring a tablet to watch content but the more options the merrier.

I've found these apps to be helpful for many reasons. While charging, waiting for an appointment or reservation, on road trips, etc.

Business is getting personal and I'm not a fan.

As it pertains to Rivian, would love to see YouTube TV some day.

I see a lot of threads talking about browsers and streaming, personally I would never use them. Usually have an iPad in the vehicle on trips and just use that if I need to look up anything or burn time streaming.

I just do not see the real need for the vehicle to have these added, what am I missing?
The last thing I want is a distracted driver watching a movie when they should be driving. I can totally see that the only time you can access the streaming services is:

1) Rear seats with monitors in the headrests and watch anytime.

2) When you are at a charging station or in the park you can stream Netflix, Disney, etc on the main screen. I know there are times I will drive with my wife to the mall and just stay in the car and surf the net or watch a movie while she is shopping.

Never. Elon retains majority of the voting shares of Tesla. So no one can vote him out.
I don't think that's true. I do think that outsiders would have to vote overwhelmingly in favor of it though, which is unlikely to happen because there are too many people that would vote for Elon as CEO even if he personally came and kicked their dog.

"Now would be great for Rivian to add Disney, Netflix"

The only reason to do add these two specific services "now" would be to get into a pissing match with Musk. Rivian has better and more productive things to do, IMO. Starting a feud between the two leading EV companies is not to anyone's advantage. If Rivian wants to add these streaming services, then Rivian should do it on their own timeline so as to get it right.

I am in the camp that says a lot of these data-intensive services will be available only after we start paying membership fees for data. I think the data costs are a big consideration in offering other things as well, like cloud-based drive cam accessible from the app.

Just give me Plex and let me do my own thing
I already use Plex to stream my own library, linked to Alexa as my music source. "Alexa, ask Plex to play my playlist ..."

You could be right about him not holding majority. I don't know for sure, just what I've heard somewhere.

Streaming content is coming.

But until the official paid connectivity service starts, it won't happen. It is simply too much bandwidth/data usage to be free for everyone.
It would be excellent if Rivian added VIDEO CAPABILITY
So that you can play from your phone
video or Netflix it’s been given the ability to play music why not when vehicle is
PARKED OR CHARGING
Which makes it safe to be entertained. ✨safe being the key Word ✨
Why just sit in the vehicles Bored because you bought an

Convenience.
Screen is bigger than anything that would be remotely convenient to carry around.
It's nice to not have to worry about charging another device, especially with limited 12v options.
Also prevents forgetting the device altogether.
Being on vehicle also means (in theory) that you wouldn't have to fiddle with additional connection settings like bluetooth, helping with audio quality and reducing a point of latency and would have better native controls for audio, skipping/ tracking than if you had to deal with a separate device.

It's the same thing as most of the nice-to-haves in these vehicles.
I could use a ryobi inflater instead of the onboard air.
But the integrated stuff makes it feel like a nicer experience.

I'm positive that improving media playback capabilities is on the Rivian roadmap. I sure as hell do not think this effort takes priority over other things they need to do for the vehicle. Especially since there are potential alternatives with the in-vehicle hotspot capabilities.

Some other issues that I value higher than video playback in the car:

[1] I want to ability to view Gear Guard videos from the phone app, not directly on the vehicle itself.
[2] Why do I have to contact Rivian to remove a Phone Key? Let me delete it from the car itself.
[3] Improved scheduler for car charging.

It's a wonder people can even survive without video in their car. Because video on your phone isn't enough. Because God forbid we are left to our own thoughts and have to find some way to occupy ourselves.

Reminds me of my kids when they were toddlers - "I'M BORED"!

When kids were young, we used to bring a portable wifi router (pocket sized) and plug in an USB flash drive with downloaded/ripped movies and TV shows they watched on road trips. Each kid had his own iPad to stream video as well as play games. It really help pass the time for them.

By the time Tesla provided in-vehicle theater apps, kids were off to universities and we rarely took a long road trips - we flew to places than drove.

What I can say is that Disney+/Hulu/Netflix is pretty handy while waiting for charging to end at supercharger stations. We usually take advantage of charging time to walk a bit, get lunch/snack/WC, and even clean the windshield (we carry portable spay, squeeze/scraper and a rag to clean off gazillion of bugs) if needed.

The only thing I miss not stopping at a gas station along the interstates - soapy water., squeeze and paper towels :)

So its not like we need the video apps - its just nice to have.
