Am I alone in that I prefer Wassym as the public face of Rivian to their official communications director? He is much more professional and transparent in his presentation. I think Rivian feels this way, too, since he's been featured more often lately in public articles, or they've been RJ himself.

Seems like that's on purpose. Tony's responsible for giving the bad news so you don't hate RJ or Wassym

Nothing new in that interview, but still a great profile of him and what they are trying to do. Rivian has some good people in these key positions. I’ve even softened on Tony over the last year. Rivian is a very deliberate company. He is likely doing things exactly as they want him to. I sure wouldn’t want his job…

It's not the fact that Tony gives bad news that bothers me. It's the fact that he does a poor job of delivering communications. The content isn't the issue for me the packaging is. For example, a few weeks ago, he sent out an email telling people they would get an email updating them in a month. So, it was an update whose sole purpose was to tell people they would get an update.

The problem wasn't that Rivian missed their deadline to update deliveries but how that message was delivered. Tony tries to tap dance around Rivian screwing up or missing deadlines but in doing so; he dances so far away from the critical points that his message gets lost in ambiguity. The email was so unclear there were threads on here of people who were scheduled to take delivery worried this email meant their delivery was canceled. Reading the screencaps of the email myself, I could see how that conclusion could have been arrived at.

I don't begrudge Rivian for having a designated guy to give bad news; although I question the strategy's effectiveness, I do take issue with how poorly his communications are worded. It's been speculated that Tony isn't even a person but AI-generated. Honestly, I think there is a possibility that is a correct theory because his wording and meaning are muddled in the same way as it would be by Chat GPT.

Guess those people that have met him in person at some of Rivian's events must be AI-generated as well....?

In that particular instance, they are acknowledging they are behind on the expected update. What's better, doing that or having silence? Obviously you're not going to please everyone in either situation when there is a delay. Obviously everyone would rather know the actual timeline up front and Rivian might have 100% intended on giving it on those dates when originally announced, but maybe a supplier threw them a curveball and they'd rather not lead people to beleive they are getting their vehicles sooner than possible.

Since Rivian is publicly traded there's a pretty big disinsentive to explain why things aren't on schedule, and there's probably a big limitation on how much information Tony is even allowed to disseminate. He isn't part of the C-Suite or the board so might not even have access to it. He's absolutely just a fall guy in my worldview, and seems like a lot of folks calling for him to be replaced feel the same. Most PR people are in those shoes.

Don't do this. Don't be a crazy conspiracy guy, there are plenty of those already. Tony is at every Space opening and the Seattle folks here got to meet him and here him speak in person. It's funny how when you see/talk with a person in real life, your feelings soften about them.

I don't think I'm getting my point across very well. Tony is bad at writing and the way his stuff is presented is often more confusing than saying nothing and what I mean by him being AI generated is all his communication is AI generated. No doubt he is a real person he just cheats at his job by using chat GPT or grammarly to correct all his press releases but either doesn't proof them after or cannot determine when the suggested corrections change the meaning of his sentences and make them confusing and contradictory.

I have no issue with the bad news itself just the delivery. Wassym has given some bad news too like the gauge faces thing for the dual motors. He did it in a clear and concise way. It left no room for interpretation or speculation. That is good communication.

I have met Tony C on multiple occasion and he has been great to chat with. For a lot of the Rivian community, he is the face of Rivian as he interacts with a ton of people in the public. Not saying that everything is BIC with their communication, but starting a car company is extremely difficult and things change daily. I know for a fact he and his team work their A$$ off and frequently listens to our community, probably more than most brands.

As for the article, kudos to Wassym the Wizard ?

FWIW, i'm not Tony C. and do not work for Rivian

I can attest to this, I met him at an EA charger in Huntington Beach earlier this year. He was great to talk to, do not know very many corporate people that just approach people in the street and start chatting. He was asking a lot of questions and seemed very interested in the responses and experiences I had with CS and the vehicle.

They have different challenges. Wassym's scope can be limited and direct, it's also generally pretty limited in what needs to be communicated. Wassym is also almost exclusively talking about topics where he is a subject matter expert and he or his group is directly responsible for.

Tony gets stuck with dealing with *everyone* on a variety of topics. I suspect most communication that's "from" Tony is basically written by committee for many of the points @Dark-Fx made. If you get a chance to talk with Tony (either in person, or written comms) he's very easy to talk to. I've never found emails from Tony to be particularly confusing, but they do tend to lack detail when Rivian isn't comfortable giving specific details. Which can then lead to confusion and/or frustration.

https://electrek.co/2023/11/10/rivian-using-software-to-scale-past-ev-rivals/

EV startup Rivian is racing past many rivals with its all-electric adventure vehicles. Yet, what many may not know is that the technology inside a Rivian is just as alluring as the design. Rivian is using software to gain an advantage over the competition.

Rivian took a page from Tesla in designing and building its electric vehicles from the ground up, with a focus on software

Scaringe said on the company’s earnings call earlier this week that vertically integrating its in-house computers, software stack, and propulsion system is a “substantial competitive advantage.”

While legacy automakers like Volkswagen have delayed important EVs, including the electric Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron, over software, Rivian is using it to its advantage.

This is what I mean by Wassym's communication style being superior to Tony's. He is talking about screwing up an update today for some people. He explains what happened in an obvious way: the wrong version of the software was sent out. Then, he admits they made a mistake and are planning to fix it.

Yeah, it sucks that it happened, but this is the best possible way to handle a screw-up.

To give Tony some credit, his team doesn’t really own anything. He’s a messenger for everyone to customers. Wassym’s team owned this entirely, and I’m glad to see Wassym acknowledge the mistake and get on it asap
