Appreciate this thread! I was having the issue where the tonneau cover would lock after opening about 6 inches. Managed to manually reset it and get some dry lube in the rails (Blaster Dry Lube w Teflon) and not only is it noticeably smoother, but it also retracts quite a bit faster!

As mentioned in another post, this particular brand leaves a white residue, so I might clean it up and redo it with dry lube that doesn’t dry white, but for now this solution is working great!

Unfortunately, my tonneau broke yesterday. This despite my using WD40 Dry Lube twice. I do think Dry Lube helps, but it’s not a cure all.

A dry lube party, that is.

Looks like the answer to the tonneau cover issues is regular maintenance using WD-40 dry lube.

I am going to be keeping my vehicle outside so lots of potential for stuff to get into my cracks.

There has got to be a better solution here. I think we need an aftermarket cover for our tonneau cover. Something that is soft but blocks water and debris that can fit over the existing locking cover to provide protection because having to lube this thing every month is a nonstarter.

My friend I mean no offense to this but this is hands down the funniest unintentional comedy video I've seen in a while :CWL:

I'm sitting here looking at the thumbnail like "this man means business. look how serious he is!"

The cover is loud as hell, you spend all that time lubing the cover, I'm on the edge of my seat thinking it will be whisper quiet..... the end result is still unacceptably loud and the unenthuiastic "it does sound smoother!" with the video ending 1 milisecond later absolutely sends me

where do I sign up for the lube party ? :turkey:

It has been two and a half weeks since service removed two of the tonneau panels on our R1T since they were damaged in the jamming process. We were told not to use the tonneau until the redesigned replacement ships. I told them that, to us, a good option would be to remove the tonneau and it’s mechanism completely and replace it with a recessed bulkhead. The service tech also mentioned that replacement with a manual cover might be in the cards.

So far I’m content to wait patiently as the tonneau is not a critical feature to me (as long as it’s stuck open and not closed). However, it is a feature we paid for so at what point should we start putting the pressure on Rivian to fix this for good (whatever the fix is)? Anyone hear when this re-designed tonneaumight be available to us? On another thread I saw that some new vins are already shipping with the new design.

Link to the thread about new design shipping?

Anyway, I guess I'm partying now too. I got some of the CRC lube at Home Depot (it's in the electrical aisle - not where WD40, etc is) and just did the rails, liberally near the cab. Opened and closed several times - still cringe worthy, but functional. I also like to wipe down black plastic trim on my cars and motorcycles with Black Magic Tire Wet. It's pretty slippery stuff, so I wiped the top and bottom of the panels thoroughly with it. We'll see...

I'd love to see pictures of the "new" design. I spoke with a Rivian rep at the SC, last week, and they said the tonneau issues are WELL known but they still haven't seen a fix and they were pretty confident that even the new deliveries were using the old design.

Oh boy, I’ll try to dig it up and check if perhaps it wasn’t on another forum. The context was that someone was taking delivery recently and had their dry lube all ready, and the Rivian rep telling them it’s not necessary because they have the new design.

I could not find WD-40 dry lube in the stores but Blaster brand dry lube also works.
Somehow that sounds dirty.

Another anecdote that doesn't prove a damn thing... I'd also read in the forums some rumors that a new tonneau design was implemented somewhere around VIN 8k or 9k. Mine being 85xx, I was hopeful.

When I picked up my truck, tonneau was dead from the start. It's closed and won't budge and the delivery specialist was surprised I was never informed. I mentioned the rumor I heard and how I hoped mine hit the cut-off, she said in her experience, VINs 10k and up are where she's seeing more functional tonneaus. Curious how it is for forum members, if those with VINs 10k and higher are having more success with their covers.

Although I have been understandably hesitant, I have had zero issues with my tonneau. My vin is 6xxx, but I have to add that she was built in July, 2022. My guess is that I was one of the builds that had to sit around awhile for various pieces to be delivered to the factory. Your guess is as good as mine, but I believe I just might have the newer version.
