Trying to get prepared for winter snow and would like to have the option of traction devices.

The manual says no chains should be used on the 20"

21 & 22" it says cable chains with diameter 16mm or less.

seems if chain links are 16mm or less that might work.

Just not able to find anything after a lot of searching..

What have you found?

From what I understand and have seen in several videos, I don't plan on buying chains for my R1T - worst case snow tires. The stock 21" are M+ S rated. If your tire is marked on the sidewall with M+S — mud and snow — this indicates you have an all-season tire. Both California and Nevada consider this an acceptable tire for the snow. How much snow do you get in your area? I drove my RAM 1500 through several Lake Tahoe winters in 4WD with M+S tires and never used chains. The R1T should be even better in the snow.

We get up to 4' of snow, not all at once. last winter was only 2'. I really just want them as back up if I get up into the mountains or get stuck. About 10 miles up that way likely to be 50% more. I've never had 4WD before, so I'm not sure how well it will work. Your information is encouraging, Thanks!

Get a set of 20” wheels, with winter tires of your choice in 275/60R20(identical diameter to Rivian oem 21/22” tires).

RUD makes chains that are small enough diameter.

You cabin looks awesome! If you haven't experienced 4WD in the snow you are in for a huge treat, it changes everything. Based on the numbers above, I personally wouldn't bother with chains. In Tahoe I routinely drive in heavy snow conditions during winter and find that I'm in good shape with 4WD. I haven't put on chains in years. When it snows again, I would find a deserted area and spend some time getting to know the capabilities of the R1T. I would slam on the brakes and test traction control, breaking, and sliding. I would push the R1T until you slide. By doing this you will build confidence and know what to expect during normal and emergency situations. I was in Iceland this past winter during two big storms and did this with my rental AWD SUV. It helped immensely knowing how the car would preform before heading out on unfamiliar roads.

To be fair, I've never had chains for my JGC. And never needed them. Even when I was the guy passing everyone going up the snowy mountain pass or with 6" dropping while we had lunch. And that was with stock tires.

I expect Rivian to perform better.

That’s good to hear. What I didn’t say yet, is I’m more concerned about roads going into the mountains that aren’t well plowed, or not plowed with maybe a foot of new snow. Just don’t want to get stuck up that way. Where rescue is more difficult. Not too concerned about traveled roads..

I don't live somewhere with compulsory chain usage, but if I did I'd probably just have snowsocks for the Rivian on top of winter specific tires. Chains are pretty unnecessary for the vast majority of snowy situations with the right tires and snowsocks are compliant.

Second on the snowsocks if you don't plan to use them extensively. Toss them in the frunk or gear tunnel. They don't weigh much and are a great emergency option. Not sure which ones would fit the Rivian.

I'm going to suggest that the advice coming from flat Manitoba might not be what the mountain man who started this thread needs.

I was surprised to see that Rivian states you can't use chains on the 20" AT's. Though I suspect you could get away with some non-aggressive ones with the suspension in high. That's what I plan to do.

Snow chains are technically "ice chains" if you spend time in the mountains in winter. It's ice under the compressed, even well plowed snow that is the problem. In the backcountry ski areas I frequent, they are mandatory and essential. Lest you and the tow truck end up like this...
