Whenever I'm trying to back into my driveway, which is a tight squeeze, the R1T automatically switches to the "Rear View", which is just a 4K closeup of my hitch ball. This is a useful view when trying to hook up my trailer, but the other 99.9% of the time, I actually want a back up camera so I'm not crashing into said trailer, or our other cars. If I have to alternate between forward and reverse to manuever, it always switches back the trailer hitch view. I just want to lock on "Bed Camera", but I can't for the life of me find the settings in the menus. TIA.

The only thing I can think of that makes the bed view default is is having the tailgate down.

Are you trying to get a new from the bed cam when reversing with the trailer hitched already? If so, I ended up installing a camera on the back of my trailer with its own screen. Does wonders.

I think that would be break some safety regs -- on account that a kid on their tricycle might be hiding behind the tailgate (hitch ball or not).

It is legally required to show the entire area that can be contacted by the bumper/body/tires.

Not possible. Regulations say you need to show the space behind the bumper.

The only thing I can think of that makes the bed view default is is having the tailgate down.
EDIT: You are correct that it's an option, it's apparently just not enabled by default in whatever software version came with this vehicle (or maybe the dealership configured it this way?) I called Rivian and they told me where in the menu system this can be enabled (photo in the newer post), which I did, and now it works as you describe.

I did actually have the tailgate down when I was seeing the behavior I described. With the tailgate fully down and bed loaded with sheets of plywood, it always selects the trailer ball camera every time I go into reverse.

The tailgate being down effectively makes this camera useless as a backup view, since the top half of the frame is just the out-of-focus tailgate. There's absolutely no visibility of anything behind the truck, all I see is the trailer hitch ball and the patch of ground below it. The tailgate will hit my garage door well before the door becomes visible in this camera's view. I kinda doubt this restricted view meets the requirements of regulations people are mentioning; its far too obstructed.

Here is exactly the view I get when I reverse into my driveway, tailgate down:

Every time, I have to tap on the profile image of the truck to get it to switch to bed view instead, so that I don't plow through my garage door.

I think there is an option to always select the bed camera in this situation? I don't have my R1T here to confirm.

OK, I just called Rivian and asked. The setting does exist, it's just not on by default (at least not in this software version) it's in a really odd place in the menu system: Settings -> Autonomy, way down at the bottom past the actual autonomous driving settings:

I'm happy the setting exists, but I would have liked it to be somewhere more intuitive, like on the cameras page. I don't have any self driving subscription on this truck and never thought to look here.

It does seem a bit strange to tie this to the tailgate position also, there are a lot of hitch receiver accessories like bike racks and utility baskets that would also obscure the rear view camera the same way (or worse) than the tailgate does. 🤔

It should be the default, but I don't think they are allowed to do that because of the regulations.
