Finally got my R1T! pics attached!!!

Wanted to share the timeline and experience for everyone still patiently waiting. Also wanted to share some thoughts on the truck now that I’ve had it a few days.

TIMELINE:

-Jan 2022 - placed pre-order for R1T, explore trim, max pack, 21” wheels, LA silver, power tonnou. No other accessories or features.

-Did not cancel when the price went up. Was going to (couldn’t justify the cost), but decided to wait it out a few weeks. Mostly because I wanted to make the decision with a “cool head”. Was very happy when they honored the original price.

-When explore trim was eliminated, switched to adventure and large pack (couldn’t justify the price of adventure+max)

-when power tonnou was eliminated, switched to no tonnou.

-Somewhere in there, I changed to canyon red after pressure from my 5 year old daughter who’s thought process was “it’s only fair because her brother got to pick blue for mommy’s model y.” She picked red because it was the closest color to pink.

-Added PPF when it became available

-I made no changes after the delivery estimate roll out

-First delivery estimate in Oct was “july - sept of 2023”

-In the Jan update, it changed to processing estimate

-Guide assigned 1/3/23

-8 steps opened on 2/8/23

-Took delivery at service center on 3/2/23

THOUGHTS:

Some Thoughts on the process and how awesome the truck is:

my guide had no idea my delivery estimate was July-Sept

Delivery was a pleasant experience, just the admin paperwork and handing over the checks. So much better than a car dealership. They didn’t really inspect my trade-in either. They just confirmed the miles and VIN. I told them about the few minor problems the jeep had, but they didn’t care.

Process was nearly identical to when my wife got her model y. Rivian experience was better though. The Rivian employee gave us the tour of the truck, then gave us time to ask our specific questions aside from the Rivian script which was nice compared to Tesla. The Model Y was our first EV and the Tesla employee basically pointed out our new Y and said good luck. It being our first EV, we were a little lost.

I did as thorough of an inspection as I could during delivery. One thing “bad” Only that the spare tire compartment wouldn’t close on both side. We tried the “one side at a time” trick, but no luck. So he showed me how to submit a service request.

All the other common delivery issues were absent. No panel gaps, paint streaks, etc. Still haven’t found any problems.

Service called me two hours later to schedule date/time to fix the spare tire latch. Availability was two weeks out. Ended up going 4 weeks out (due to my schedule).

The quality is incredible. When we got the Tesla, we were impressed with its quality compared to my jeep and my wife’s Prius (that thing was poorly put together and felt like it was falling apart from day 1). Compared to the Rivian, the Telsa almost feels like a flimsy toy (like our Prius did to the Tesla).

I love the Canyon Red color! It changes depending on the lighting. Just like how the landscape of a real canyon changes color with the lighting as the sun moves. I hope Rivian intended to do that.

I really like the second screen behind the steering wheel. It has the car’s interpretation of the road like teslas but it’s easier to see. I don’t have to move my head and take eyes off the road as much. I also love how it shows the map on this screen as well. One of my biggest gripes with the Telsa is that all of the instrument gauges are on that screen in the middle of the dash.

my kids (7 and 5) love playing in the gear tunnel. They think it’s the best thing ever. At least 10 times a day, they ask me to open it just so they can crawl in and out of it.

Attached are some pics of what my daughter has dubbed “the red rocket” (due to its acceleration power) at a nature preservation right behind my house.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Beautiful - congratulations!! Canyon Red has become my favorite color. Ok, maybe a close 2nd to Rivian Blue. :)

Congrats! Appreciate your write-up of the whole experience. Glad it went so well. Your situation is very similar to mine (Max/Explore) but I have thus far held on, unsure if I'm going to stick with Max and go Dual, or not. I will wait at least until the many times delayed now "April" delivery timeline update to decide.

I am set on Forest Green, which in addition to being my favorite color since I was a kid, is to me is a fun change from my usual very reserved "always black" vehicles. Yet almost every time I see Red especially in certain light I like it so much I can't help but consider switching. At the end of the day I'm afraid red is just too conspicuous for me. But boy does it look nice. Enjoy the Red Rocket.

Can you talk about the factory PPF? Quality? Did they actually do it at the factory or do they send to a 3rd party shop? I haven't heard much conversation about experience with the factory PPF.

Congrats on the new truck!

Curious if you are hearing any wind noise in the cabin at say 70mph? It was a notable issue for a long time. I’m hoping it has been addressed.

what do they tell you at delivery regarding the Tonneau??

I think it was done at the factory. Or at least somewhere near it. I didn’t ask that specific question. My guide did say it was waiting to ship from Normal but was waiting on the PPF.

Honestly, , if I didn’t buy it AND if the service center didn’t point it out, I would have never known there was PPF on there. There is no color difference, and the only way you see it is at the edges of the panel where the PPF ends. And even then, it’s a barely visible thin clear/white-ish line that runs parallel to the panel’s edge.

Haven’t noticed anything at that speed. I’ll look (listen??) for it on my way to work tomorrow.

San Diego freeways are pretty loud, so hopefully that won’t interfere with listening for it.

I went with the No Tonneau option, so it never came up in conversation.

My pic where right before sunset with the sun behind the mountain. It gave it a deep red color. Right now in the morning sunlight, it almost looks orange.

I should take pics of it throughout the day and make a post about it. Almost like the color changing hot wheels I played with as a kid.

All quite on this.

Once I hit 75, I could barely hear a slight whine coming from the frunk area (outside the cabin) but I had to concentrate and try really hard to hear it. It was so subtle I’d never notice it otherwise, and once I started focusing on driving again, it vanished.

hope That helps.

Don't want to be a downer about the name, and the R1T looks great in Red Canyon, but you might want to check Urban Dictionary before using "red rocket" too broadly. There also is a recent dark comedy film about a former porn star (male) of the same name.

This is not a downer, but an upper! Red Rocket was child-code for dog erection long before Urban Dictionary was alive. When my kid said it, my mind immediately went to 10-year-old me, and I had to fight myself from laughing.

I think that moment solidified it as a name even more me. The kids think everything pee, poo, etc. are funny right now. They'll figure it out soon and laugh even more.

As for the movie (sounds interesting and is now on my to-watch-list), I'll invoke the Rule of 34. If I get strange looks, won't bother me none, I'm having a blast with it. Most of my friends will appreciate it too.

But in all seriousness, good looking out! That's important info to have for people who don't have the same sense of humor as me and would find it embarrassing.
