Makes sense. Not the most efficient delivery method if you need to clear your lot.

Wonder if it’s state-specific due to dealer laws. I had to wait extra time to take delivery in Oregon because home delivery was the only option permitted. They refused to let me come to the service center.

They should have done this from the start. I would have picked up from the factory if I had the choice in September. Regardless it makes good financial sense to pay that extra and I think anyone with a home delivery can understand the charge.

I am 2 hours from Houston. With no dealer network, Louisiana residents cannot take delivery in TX without paying sales tax twice. I will be interested to see if Rivian still charges for home delivery.

I agree home delivery is an expensive bottle neck but if they are charging extra for it they should also waive the destination fee if you pick up at the factory... fair is fair. I offered to pick up at the factory when I completed my 8 step in May 2022 and guide stated they weren't really set up for deliveries (PDI etc...) at factory so I said Ok I'll pick up at service center and guide gave me contact for service center. When I contacted service center (Brooklyn) they said THEY PREFERED home delivery and they would have my R1t to me in less than a week which they did. Guess Rivian has outgrown that aspiration. Not a bad thing but some customers would probably rather see the MSRP increase by $1000 than see a home delivery charge of $1000... just a matter of feeling nickel and dimed plus could technically affect insurance claims if totaled/ resale value...

Did you run into that issue personally? I have bought many, many vehicles out of state and not once ever paid sales tax in the state I purchase, only in the state I am registering.

Yes. TX charges sales tax at point of sale and La charges at registration unless you can get a dealer to invoice across state lines. When I bought my Tesla I had to drive 5 hrs to MS instead of two hours to TX.

I take it TX and LA don't have a reciprocity agreement?

But home delivery is a special fee for extra service. The destination fee is a fair share fee spread across all vehicles. My preference would be to drop destination fees all together and make it part of the MSRP, that is where it belongs to better show actual vehicle cost.

So what is the fee? Didn't see it listed in the article. Or is it subject to location?

I was not offered home delivery on mine back in March. They specifically told me they wanted me to come to Richmond, but just as well - I'd never driven any EV before in my life so was glad to do it with someone from there. ?

I'll tell you what it is, for a fee. (I have no idea what it is, but I imagine it's either reasonable, or unreasonable to discourage people from actually doing it)

I am pretty sure the destination fee is enforced by Federal law. It has the be always there and the same for everyone.

It has to be the same for every purchaser regardless of location for a given model. However, a manufacture is not required to charge one in the first place.

Also manufactures are raising destination fees so they can advertise a lower price. It should absolutely be baked into the MSRP. https://www.consumerreports.org/buying-a-car/the-truth-about-destination-fees-a1615480982/
