Is that one even newer than the other silver one that had been spotted (which I think still had the charge port in a different place)? Or is it the same one?

Either way, it's looking goooooood.

I hope a lot of people go see this, then maybe we can get away from these weird comparisons between the R2 and the MY. They are not in the same class. The R2 comes across as an R1S, but with only 2 rows of seats. The MY comes across as a sedan, but maybe a little taller.

I placed an order for an R2 on the first day, because it's a perfect replacement for my Gen 3 4Runner both in size and capability. Seeing it in person on two occasions only confirmed that.

Same one. Too soon for them to build one off of the production line and give away final production specs ahead of event slated for early next year.

People will make thoughtless comparisons and draw false equivalencies anyway.

Meh. If all we get out of this is the same silver color we've already seen in a static display that's a giant nothingburger IMO.

I'm old enough to remember when Rivian embraced bold colors instead of boring white and silver.

I'm all for colors - I bought a Rivian Blue R1T and won't ever again buy a vehicle in some shade of gray.

But I don't think that showing a silver R2 means that is the only color we'll see. Remember that the R1 colors were not revealed until the configurator was made public in late 2020. Even then, the exterior and interior colors (esp Limestone and Ocean Coast) evolved up until the day they were released.

I expect, nay DEMAND, that the R2 be released in colors other than grayscale, otherwise I for one shall not purchase it.

I agree although my European heritage defines anything with a sloping rear hatch as a hatch back rather than a sedan. There are too many automotive classifications nowadays without meaningful distinction in my view, although I grudgingly acknowledge the auto makers marketing requirement that drives this. That said the MY is to me at least surprisingly larger when seen alongside other vehicles than its shape/style suggests in isolation. But I just can't call something that shape an SUV.

That said, on a more objective level both vehicles are quite close in a number of metrics, based on early R@ data from the Rivian website and the MY online owners manual:
Edited: To correct overall wheelsize on MY
R2MY Premium
Length185.6"188.7
Width (excl folded mirrors)75" (assume excl folded mirrors)75.6"

Generally I agree, but the numbers are deceptive. The R2 height, for example, it pretty constant from the top of the windshield to the back of the vehicle. The MY height is just the maximum, which peaks around the driver's seat and drops off significantly behind that. So just comparing the peak height does not reveal the true picture.

Also, the ground clearance is super important, at least to me. 9.8" is huge - much better than almost anything out there, even a base Jeep. Calling something an "SUV" that only has 6.6" of clearance is insane. These days people are calling everything "SUV" because "minivan" and "station wagon" are out of fashion. But there are very few vehicles these days that deserve the SUV moniker. R2 is one of them.

Yup, that's the hatch back penalty.

Likewise. I want to at least go soft-roading with my next vehicle and perhaps a little more, without constantly worrying about clearance, but I don't want to wait for and jump up to the Scout Traveler to do so. If for whatever reason the R2 doesn't work for me, possibly because the range won't meet my requirements for longer off-roading jaunts, or the space is a bit too tight for sleeping in the vehicle, then its probably either a used or new R1S.

White and silver are neutral colors. Among car designers, it's known that if a car looks good in these neutral colors, then it will look good in just about any other.

Whenever that launch event is next year, you will see other colors.

Lots of Teslas, Future: R2
I hope a lot of people go see this, then maybe we can get away from these weird comparisons between the R2 and the MY. They are not in the same class.
Except for the undeniable fact that they're both quite literally in the same class: Mid-size SUV

On top of that, they both belong to an even more specific subset that includes far less vehicles currently: Mid-size SUV BEV. Of which there aren't terribly many examples to date so it would be silly not to compare them.

The only thing "weird" here is your insistence that they're not in the same class and that you don't seem to understand why people compare the two.

This would all be a lot less "weird" if you would just accept the fact that they're going to be compared. You can debate all you want over which one will be compared favorably in what category but the comparisons are going to flow based on them both being in the exact same segment.

Such a "weird" claim to make.

I took a friend to the Rivian shop a couple of days ago, also to replace his ancient 4Runner. He really liked the R1T, but is more likely to go for an R2 based on the size (and cost).

And agreed, comparisons between a Rivian and a Model Y are silly to ME because I would never consider a Model Y because it doesn't support MY use cases ... so not a competitor.

Anyhow, let's keep the PHOTOS coming, and keep the other INFO useful and upbeat!

I think the wildest part is that Rivian and RJ himself have made it very clear that this was made with the intention to compete against the Model Y. Size, range, pricing, etc. Ok, so the R2 is taller...ok? If it grabs crowds from 4Runners, Passports, Jeeps, etc, then even better. No one loses in either scenario so idk why people keep insisting that the Model Y and R2 are of different universes. The more share of the pie that the R2 can take, the better.

I just remember how iconic the Forest Green R1S and Rivian Blue R1T were when they were first shown. I guess they think they are now established enough that they don't need color to make a splash but I find it to be boooooooooorrrrrinnnggggggggg.
