I had one of these on my old Chevy truck. Actually, I had two of them. The first one got mangled when I was rear ended by some 🤡 in an F150 who was texting & driving and hit me at a stop light. But it absorbed all the damage and protected my vehicle. Given we've all seen the threads about the "41K repair estimate" from being rear-ended, I desperately want to improve my protection from the rear so ordered one of these.

Overall, was disappointed with the fit on the Rivian and after speaking with customer service, wound up returning the product. They say it's a "universal" product, but does not fit well with the Rivian's recessed hitch. Neither the shaft nor the "anti-rattle clip" could barely reach the hitch in its recessed location, it rattled like crazy, and the ends (that angle in slightly) were dangerously close to scratching / banging into the back bumper & reverse lights, even when installed in the very last hole. I suspect any vehicle with a recessed hitch would have the same problem.

So I wound up returning this but will keep my eye out for comparable products. If they made something like this just about 4" longer hitch receiver shaft, I think it would fit really well. A few pictures from when I had it installed:

When you were near ended and it destroyed your old one, did you have any subframe damage? I'm suspicious my cracked subframe was a combination of the bike rack being hit and an original welded (vs cast) subframe. I currently keep my hitch extender on at all times to protect but sorry about causing more hidden damage in the process.

I use Weathertech's hitch step while in Mexico. Drivers down there use the "contact method" while parking. Actually using your bumper/fender to detect how close they are seems to be accepted practice.

I take it off when not down there however, because surprisingly, it does have an affect on aero.

Rivian's recessed hitch receiver required me to add an extender for the bike rack to fit properly (it was way too close otherwise). While I was at it, I also added a 4" drop to it and now the bikes ride better.

You may need to do something like that with a step as well.

Opal has a different step that works, but I might like the Nilight hitch step better.

Does anybody willing to send the receiver hitch cover they no longer use?

For some reason, my truck just doesn't have one.

What kind of bike rack do you have, and is a 4" drop enough to get your tailgate open with it on?

Why didn't you use a hitch extender? Are there any problems with using one?

Are there any issues with restricting rear camera view, using one of these receiver hitch steps?
Has anyone tried one of these from Supreme Suspensions? It would add some bumper/tailgate protection, be a small step, and has a D-ring shackle connection point (so that one could just add a shackle for off-road recovery purposes).
