I really like it, seems cool and functional. It just needs to clear a tow hitch.

i don't think i need a step never had issues getting into a bed before. but i did really like the prototype design where it would go all the way down made it to where you could reach right in to the bed spare tire hole. also if you had to forklift a load into the truck it would be out of the way so you could load directly into the bed.

Absolutely agree! That multi-pro tailgate is awesome. Easily best-in-class.

I’d say the ridgeline tailgate is second. Ford third. Then a “standard” tailgate. Then the stupid ram barn door is last.

I agree. If a company comes up with an idea, they patent it even if you don't have plans to use it. They may use it in the future, or want to license it to another company.

That would also drastically change the light bar in the back along with the clean logo; it would also add two weird lines down the tailgate cutting it into three sections. I think they have a better chance making something clever that pops out of the top of the current tailgate: hidden in plain sight until you need it. It already has a pretty big top plastic piece that they can cleverly engineer.

i think the best solution if not the for the 180 degree open would be to license fords version, no need to re-design the entire tailgate or to have to make changes to the tail light bar, this would be the most economical and easiest change.

As a long time Ridgeline owner, I can say Honda's dual action tailgate is the way to go. I probably use the swing option more than the fold down as it makes the in-bed trunk much more accessible.
I'm guessing there are patent issues on this as well.

I believe it's in response to what other truck manufactures are currently marketing.

When I was a kid one of my friend's family had a '67 or '68 Ford station wagon that had this feature - very useful!
