That was entertaining. Nice to know that services like the guy’s in the video exist. Don’t think I’d take my truck to a trail like that unless I had no children and more disposable income.
Children and disposable income do tend to be inversely correlated.

I wonder what exactly happened to cause the tie rod to bend and then snap off.

I was thinking the same. Ive been on that trail and I was more worried about ground clearance. I guess it was just unlucky for that driver.

The example in the video is obviously a more extreme use case, but I wonder if this could be related to all of the shaking steering wheel reports that are out there.

I don’t know much about vehicle mechanics, but when I was reading about all of the causes of wheel shake while driving, one of the causes listed was defective/worn tie rod.

That much weight and that much power, something gotta give.

Just love that rescue truck. The driver had too many teeth though.

I have had the a same thing happen in my 4runner when the front tires were pulling hard over a rock. Luckily I carry a spare so it was a relatively quick fix. When the front tires are pulling it puts the tie rods in compression, and IFS tie rods tend to be thin so they buckle. There are a bunch of aftermarket fixes for chevy trucks for their tie rods.

Fins and Things can be impressive but it’s a relatively easy trail and should be no issue for a Rivian.
I’ve done it a couple times a few years ago with a LR4 (slightly better departure angle I believe but not by much and less ground clearance).
It’s good to see people doing fun stuff with their truck.
RC looks at home in Moab!!

For serious off-roading you want your tierod to be the fuse.

Sleeving them transfers the stress to the steering rack.

Would you rather pay $75 for a tie rod and about 30 minutes to change it, or $3000 for a steering rack and all weekend?

My other rig is a built ZR2 and I run the stock tie rods on purpose.

Everyone should visit MOAB and try it out. If you don't wanna take your Rivian on it - you can rent or ride (but you should take your Rivian on it).

edit: @Joneholland would love to see your ZR2! That's my current truck too.

Yeah, tie rods are designed to be the “fuse” in a suspension causing them to fail as protection for the major components longevity. I took out my Nissan Pathfinder’s tie rod as a teen going over a curb in a completely empty freshly paved neighborhood (yet to be built) at too great a speed. Luckily the tie rod failed dramatically saving the rest of the suspension.
