She turned left in front of us while driving straight in an intersection. The truck did NOTHING to help. In contrast, years ago, my Tesla prevented me going into an intersection when a red light runner was coming from the far right. And that was a 2019 with the old hardware and software. Am I sure a Tesla would prevent this? 90% yes. Certainly a Waymo would. AEB triggers warnings on occasion when I'm coming up behind a car too fast for its taste and far from crashing, but in this case, nothing.

I absolutely would never buy anything other than a Tesla today, if I didn't need a truck, and obviously, their truck is a shitshow.

Optionally, one could also try to pay more attention and not solely rely on technology.

I remember years ago when I purchased my first car with the rearview camera tech. As the salesman was going over things, he said “in the event that the camera doesn’t work…” I interrupted him and said “turn my head and use my eyes?” lol.

I understand that you are angry
Not even a little bit. Not at all. Not at the driver, who was having a medical crisis with her husband and distracted, not at Rivian for making hot garbage software, it's just a thing.

no video? SAD!
More hot garbage from Rivian. It uses a screwy file encoder that often causes problems. Neither Quicktime nor iPhoto want to deal with it properly to edit the ten minutes into something I can post. I'll try Lumafusion later. For now, I'm going out for the day with a visiting friend.

First, that is rotten luck, very sorry. Second, Rivian needs look at this, it is a big miss. Third, as many, many others will note, there are a great many excellent ADAS systems out there beyond Tesla's - which is genuinely good. (Should probably note that Cybertrucks are available really, really cheap so there are alternatives.)

Every vehicle is a compromise. I don't know of another truck that has a better set of compromises. We refuse to drive ICE. We need a truck in the household. I take frequent road trips which include off road travel, sometimes pretty significant ones. We both HATE the old-think vehicles like the Chevy EV truck and Lightning. Once we put all those together...nothing left but a Rivian. We would have to give up things, and I don't think the electronics in the Ford or Chevy are better. We spent a few years without a truck or off road vehicle, just the Tesla, and it was not good. Can I make myself survive it? Of course! Did I hate giving up things and dealing with borrowing/renting trucks? Definitely.

Had a 2015 BMW i3 that, in a similar geometry, prevented a collision (brakes fully engaged before I could lift halfway off the go pedal). Teslas are not special.

edit to add: of course this sucks and I wish it hadn’t happened to you. Definitely a miss on the Rivian ADAS. Glad you are safe.

With Tesla you have to worry about the FSD driving into another car or crashing because it can’t compute. Go look at the detailed data Tesla provided. Much greater accidents than human drivers. Several current lawsuits where the driver was alert and the Tesla crashed on its own.

Tesla ADAS is not Autopilot, is Not FSD.
I have a 2020 Model Y and the ADAS is much better. Having said that, no alternate universes here, Tesla may or may not have prevented this collision.

you state safety is the most important (I agree) but then come up with restrictions on your choice (can’t buy a ICE, calling Chevy or Fords EV trucks “old think”). So you restrictions don’t align with your supposed first priority of safety.

I wish you could have taken one of the times my AEB went off for no reason and put it towards preventing this accident instead. Since Rivian switched to their system the AEB has gone off at random several times, so I can say that there is probably some validity to your claim that it was deficient in this case.

Although there is one thing that has heightened my curiosity. Who was driving, you or your Comma system? Perhaps this accident could have been avoided if you had been paying closer attention. It is also possible that using an unauthorized 3rd-party self-driving controller contributed to this accident. IDK enough about the technology, but I would think unforeseen interactions with Rivian's system could happen.

Would have to see footage of the accident to know how useful AEB would have been. If you didn't have time to react sufficient to avoid the accident, it's possible that AEB wouldn't have either.

And Tesla's systems aren't magic. Sure, they can avoid some predictable driver badness, but not all.

To Donald's point, though, Comma doesn't disable vehicle's AEB. If the vehicle would kick in its automated braking, it overrides Comma. Unlike Uber's incident a few years ago where their automation DID override vehicle manufacturer safety systems.

But, as is always clear - automated driving systems like Comma, and the presence of AEB doesn't remove responsibility from the person in the driver's seat to pay attention to the road and hit the brakes in situations like this.
