I may be in the minority, but I much prefer the charge port in the front. I like pulling into fast chargers and I don't use Tesla chargers more than a few times a year. Backing into busy and tight charging stations can be a big PITA.The R2 I drove had the charge port door aligned properly. I like the location on the driver side rear so I can use Tesla chargers with no issues.
What am I looking at?
My biggest head scratcher from my test drive was how they thought that charge door was acceptable. It feels horrible and cheap, and now the misalignments are going to be what non-Rivian owners see when they check out the cool new SUV next to them. Completely boggles my mind. They had the Model Y to learn from for years. I’m still getting the launch edition but I just don’t understand this choice
Because they wanted to put their money towards something more important than a motorized door for the charging port? The design they chose for the R1 does some crazy moves, so maybe they went with a simple flap as it's most likely easier and cheaper to replace.
I get that, but when the Model Y is your reference and main competitor, I would’ve made that thing a little more substantial
The complaint is not about it being non-motorized. The complaint is that it feels flimsy and cheap when you open it. A touch point that you’re going to be interacting with frequently shouldn’t feel cheap.
It is plastic, and it does feel cheap, but other than German OEM, most are plastic doors. The Tesla doors are plastic too. Granted they open and close automatically, so one doesn’t interact with them much.
