Strongly considering getting an R2 'soon'. I'm thinking I should probably wait for LiDAR/Gen3 autonomy, but I've got a couple unanswered questions that I haven't been able to discern elsewhere about the rear hatch...
  1. Does anyone know of a 'first look' that took actual measurements of the vehicle, specifically the rear hatch opening height & width? What are they?
  2. Does the software support setting a rear door open height limit so that it won't hit the bottom lip of an open garage door? Obviously this might not be known specifically for the R2 yet, but does the R1S support it?

For 2) this functionality isn't currently on the R1S, but it's something I've been wanting for years and seems like something they should be able to enable through a software update.

I don't think the R1 even has a position sensor for the hatch. I believe it stores position in memory based on how long the actuators were moving. I've had times when the hatch was opened partially, then went to sleep, then when i closed it, it slammed itself shut instead of slowing down at the end for the close.

That's.. really unfortunate. My Toyota has this ability, so I assumed Rivians would, too..

Not being able to set an open limit means having to back your vehicle out of the garage to access the cargo space, unless you want to risk blowing up your rear window or scratching/denting the door as it runs into the lip of your garage door opening.

Really depends on the garage. I can open the rear hatch on multiple vehicles and have no impact concerns.

Most garage doors only have an opening height of about 7ft. I doubt that's high enough for the R2's rear hatch to fully open without hitting.

I know the R2 should be a bit shorter than my Grand Highlander, but my GH's rear hatch would 100% hit the lip of the garage door if it didn't have the limiter.

I'm just ready to stop my R1S liftgate by hand if it's going to be close. It doesn't try very hard to continue once it encounters resistance.

The shape of the hatches might help, unlike highlander and most SUV, Rivians have a pretty vertical/flat trunk so they open more flat so they need a little less clearance.

Thanks. I was about to go hunt for some 'first look' vids again to see if I could find an angle like that to approximate in lieu of anyone having actual measurements. With an overall height of 67" or about 5.5ft... it looks like the R2's rear door might lift high enough (>18") to hit a typical garage door opening.

As mentioned, with R1S you can physically stop the hatch at the desired height, but I think you can even turn off the powered hatch in settings and always open it manually.

Well the good thing is you can drop the rear window for some access into the trunk space :)

For reference in case it helps at all. Yesterday I rented a 2025 Rav4 for the last ski trip of the season and the fully open rear hatch on that cleared my open garage door fitted in a 7 foot high opening. I held onto it mind until I was certain it wouldn't hit. Rav4 at 66.5" tall has a similar overall height to R2 at 66.9", and the Rav4 tailgate seems to lift significantly higher than the images above show.

Yep. Looking forward to being able to do that. Might be preferable to ducking under partially raised rear door tbh... Not to mention being able to fit long stuff through the rear window without having to awkwardly bungee the hatch closed (or remove anything else I might have in the cargo area to keep it from falling out).
Granted... my Grand Highlander can fit 10ft long material with the rear hatch closed. Don't think the R2 will be able to do that, but it doesn't necessarily need to either, with the rear window.

I could fit 10 foot fencing lumber in my Audi A6 with the trunk lid closed ... although it was well over 20 years old when I first did that. Needed to recline the front passenger seat far enough back so it rested on the rear seat for support and to get the lumber laying closer to flat. I'd hire a truck or van before doing that on a new vehicle though.
