Considering that the 6 seat Tesla is an albatross, there is no need to attempt to compete with it. This obsession with 7 seat vehicles is utterly nonsensical given that family size is shrinking, not growing.

With Tesla expected to launch the Model YL in North America soon (this weekend?), it got me thinking...

Even though the YL is a six-seater and the R2 is currently a five-seater, I think they'll compete for many of the same buyers, especially families and those looking for extra interior space for camping, road trips, and everyday adventures.

Do you think Rivian should consider a three-row R2 in the future?

I'm not suggesting it would replace the R1S. The R1S should remain Rivian's premium flagship. But a more affordable three-row Rivian could open the brand up to a much larger audience. Looking at the R2's proportions, it seems like it could be possible with some creative packaging and a few design tweaks.

The timing is interesting too. With Tesla shifting more attention toward the Model Y lineup, it makes me wonder if there's an opportunity for Rivian to eventually offer a more affordable three-row SUV below the R1S.

I'd be curious to hear what everyone thinks. Would you rather see Rivian keep the R2 as-is, or would you be interested in a three-row variant?
There should be one more choice in your poll - “Oh hell, NO!”

Getting in and out of the third row in the R1S is a pain - can't imagine how useful a 3rd row in a smaller vehicle would be.

The R1s should have a 5 seat option and a cargo area covered with something that's not carpet.

The Tesla showroom that used to be at the Jax Town Center had a 3-row (not this new goofy L model :D ), and for kicks I climbed in the back.

Holy Forkin' Heck.

I almost died ... NFW, and 7" isn't going to make that much difference.

If you've got a big family, you need space to expand, to manage kids, move around the interior for loading, car seats, etc., buy a proper 3 row.

Love it! Take the delivery vans and put loads of seats in there! Make it into a camper/minivan. I would never buy it but, apparently there are people that will. Cheers.
I feel like the roof doesn't get considered enough. Sure, inclement weather can be a concern, but just include 5th and 6th row support gear:

Minivan with the highest ground clearance is 6.9" (Sienna), only two with AWD (Sienna and certain Pacifica trims), and most offer around 3500 for towing.

While very few families that need more than 5 seats are actually off roading, many absolutely value the above features especially for their winter needs.

Yes, minivans can be fantastic, but they don't fulfill the needs for everyone.
A Gravity then.......

The Lucid Gravity is a great minivan without sliding doors. It was on our short list. It was a 51/49 situation and the R1S eventually took the cake.

way too early to even consider it, maybe someday when they are raking in profits. I'm expecting that, between their ambitious autonomy goals, releasing the R3, and opening their Atlanta plant to ramp up production, they won't consider R2 variants. The added inventory of R1S deals, as more exit leases will help fill the niche for buyers wanting an affordable 3-row Rivian.

Great point.
