Rivian Stories dropped their YT video of their conversation with Tony, highlights:
  • Covers the new options for us Max Pack holdouts, die-hards, crazies, fanatics
  • Dual Motor architecture overview with Mason (the engineer from their Instagram post)
  • TBD on the “commerce” of buying/upgrading to the high-performance 700hp dual-motor from the 600hp dual-motor; they are scoping this but not confirmed if you can upgrade later via a software unlock
    • My read: technically feasible but no word yet whether Rivian will decide to permit this & what the cost will be
  • AWD “pretty close” to straight line performance as Quad Motor
  • Torque Vectoring confirmed (duh)
  • Brake vectoring will be used on the Dual Motor system (also, duh)
  • “What could be better? And the only thing you can say is…Quad” (confirming that the quad will feel / function better, seamless performance - but you “can’t tell” unless you drive both)
  • No plans currently for lockers - boo!
  • Lots of friendly softball questions & spin, “glad the Max Pack is still around,” or “Max Pack will be more capable than other options for 99% of customers”
    • No hate here, I get it, they have a lot of haterade out there & need a friendly outlet, plus I don’t begrudge Rivian Stories for getting us info, but have to be candid.
  • Configurator should show these options in “early Q1 2023”
  • Triple motor - considered? Mason: “Sure, considered, available if we choose to do that…”
  • R1S models will be added to the online R1 shop

So, for me, I’ll wait to take delivery of a Max Pack until after I see & hear real-world reviews of the performance of the Dual motor off-road.

Rivian R1T R1S No 800V architecture for Max Pack - confirmed 585xrru5nfld43ms4oyavz8842xde1mtzm0ae6sw&rid=giphy

Call me a Mad Max Max Pack holdout but I’m looking for max range + max performance even if I gotta wait for it (I’m far enough back in the queue that the difference in wait time won’t be significant).

However, if the increase in range for the new Max Build (which is sounding more & more like it will wind up being far less than 180mWh) winds up being negligible between conserve mode on a quad bosch (effectively dual-motor functionally), then I’ll be quite frustrated: that will have meant it would have been more ideal to select a Quad Motor far earlier (yeah yeah yeah I can hear the “I told ya so”s coming).

I just want some clarity, hoping we see some actual production units sent for review/testing soon:

IMO, Rivian should have or should now (perhaps soon?) simplify their lines: Quad Bosch motors for LE only, then transition exclusively to Enduro motors with Quad-Enduro far in the horizon once they have sufficient in-house Enduro Motor supplies for quad-enduros.

I think for people doing any sort of longer distance towing that the Silverado EV is going to end up being king of the hill for a while. GM just has to start shipping their Ultium vehicles at volume.

I just want them to release these range estimates already. That will be the clincher for so many people. And if it’s not 355-360, I’m going quad all the way.

Where are you seeing GM is shipping Ultium vehicles at volume? In Q4 they delivered 86 Lyriqs and 72 Hummers. (16,108 Bolts but I didn't think they are Ultium yet). I know shipping/delivering can be two different stats.

I agree. Their 800V system will help with recharging that big battery. I do think they will do the same thing as Rivian though. Start with the standard range and wait as long as possible to introduce the max range version.

Nice of them to put this info out, again, via an interview with a single third party Vs a communication to customers directly or even a grader press release of some sort.

GM is shipping the higher trim Worktrucks first because they are direct competition with the existing Lightning.

How do you know they didn't send it first to their customers? ;)

I do question the effectiveness of releasing this information to a YT channel that gets low single digit thousand views on their channel (unfortunately as some of the discussions are good). Third parties should never be a substitute for direct consumer contact and if you go the third party route choose someone with a greater reach.

I’m exhausted by rivian continually despecing the car I was sold on and have been dreaming about. I’m a pre march friend and family preorder for a max pack and now am looking forward to todays ram announcement. If anyone is in the SF bay and wants to get a dual motor max pack before the masses lmk. If you’re down to buy from a private party I’ll config it to your spec and just sell it to you.

It’s at 19:21; I updated the YouTube link in the OG post to link directly to that time stamp.

I think the important thing to note is that NO R1 either Quad or Dual motor independent of the battery size will be getting 800V architecture in the immediate future. That's kind of disappointing because in 2021 (maybe early 2022) they still had verbiage on their site that stated that they'd be able to to increase to 300+kWh charging via OTA updates. This means that everyone is stuck with the current low 200 kWh fast charging.
