Can't offer a "discounted rate" until you raise rates to be on par with other open chargers.

They seem to be (smartly) slowly rolling out perks, different people will be incentivized differently. So use things like this to either keep people on it or attract new takers. Subscription Model 101
Plus, if you (general sense) don't like RAN's price, go somewhere else... and let law of supply and demand do what it does. Honestly, it's such a small network now, I don't get why people are so upset/affected by the pricing change.

This made me go out and look to see where the closest RAN is to me. It is in Wichita (130mi) away and cost 55¢/kWh at a max charge of 300kW with 6 chargers

I am on a road trip in central CA with a few RAN and TSC on the same shared lots.

Santa Nella
TSC 48 chargers $0.55-59/kw
RAN 6 chargers $0.69/kw

Why would I choose RAN?

I know the phrase vote with your dollars, and outside of geopolitics why would I choose RAN?

Big miss Rivian, at minimum match the TSC pricing (or negotiate with $PGE$ better)

And no one is forcing you to.

Basic rules of economics at play:
  • Supply and demand—less patronage will inform them they went to far with price hikes.
  • Economy of scale—far smaller network, fewer locations to offset operating expenses; have to charge more to be sustainable.

That RAN is at $0.63, or at least it was when I used it last and shows up that way in my app. The SC at Santa Nella shows up on the Tesla app as $0.59, so 4c difference.

14c gap would be significant. Your call on who you spend your money with.

Leasing Tesla Model 3 until Rivian R3X comes out.
Damn, does the RAN have fixed pricing or does it vary by time of day?

I charged my M3 recently in Columbus, Ohio and it was $0.44 kW at an old slower V2 by a grocery store and $0.31 kW at a new faster V3.

If you can, charge at home. I finally got my set up going and it only costs $0.16 kW! Big savings.

After checking out a few California RANs in the Rivian mobile app, they are all fix priced. Not same price, but all above 60¢.

I just got home from a 5 day trip to Moab, Utah. Drove from Park City and back and used Tesla and Electrify America charging stations. The Tesla charger in Wellington, Utah cost 52 cents/kWh, the Electrify America in Green River, Utah was 54 cents/kWh, and the Electrify America charger in Moab was 22 cents/kWh. A huge difference !! I use a Rocky Mountain Power discount code at the EA chargers because I am a Rocky Mountain Power customer at home in Park City. But I only got the discount in Moab. Just shows that location matters and discount codes don't always apply. After the trip I figured my fuel cost savings compared to driving my Sprinter van was about 35% but that also included leaving home with a 100% charge provided by solar panels that only cost $18,000 to install. How do you figure that into the equation??? Some things just make you feel good so cost doesn't matter. Also, I stopped twice on the way home for a total of 28 minutes of charging. Both Tesla and EA were 350 amp chargers. We only had enough time to let the dog out of the truck for a run in the park and stretch our legs before I was charged. The last charge was 11 minutes because I did not want to arrive home with only 51 miles of range left. I ended up with 160 miles left so could have easily made it home on just one stop. This is my fourth long distance trip in the Rivian. Two to Las Vegas, one to Sun Valley, Idaho and this one to Moab. My wife finally aggress it 's not that difficult. She is now thinking about buying an R3 when they are available.

RAN now is the most expensive public charging option after the price hike. I just pay the Tesla membership for a month and use Supercharger when I go on a road trip.

I just checked, that RAN is .63, the TSC membership/owner price is .45 that .18 difference is pretty significant.

I wanted to support the RAN on my recent long trip but I only used it a few times when alternatives were not convienant because of pricing. I am not saying RAN prices need to be the same price or lower than others but be competitive. A few pennie’s here and there are ok but when price differences are .10 or more that adds up quick. I have not done a full analysis for the savings on this recent trip but I used 3,150 kWh and even if the difference was only .10 (most places were higher) that is $315 dollars savings. Not a huge amount of money but based on .60 a kWh at most RAN locations that is close to 1155 miles in my R1S.

I used mostly TSC because the price differences were like above or even bigger at most locations. Even EA was cheaper than RAN but sometimes only because of membership pricing. Virtually all of my TSC charges were under .40, some well under especially with late night TOU pricing. The highest I paid at TSC was .46 in Tucson, AZ. Here are the lowest TSC membership prices I paid on this trip:

Needles, CA .25
Foxborough, MA .24
Cranbury, NJ .21
Newman, GA .29
Destin, FL .27

Did the full analysis of my trip, 6700 miles, total cost was 1,215.05. The Tesla and EA costs are membership prices (except 1 Tesla stop where it would not start with the Tesla App so paid through Rivian at non-member price).

Total kWh is what the charge summaries show delivered, my trip meter said I used 3,149.6 on the trip so looks like 80.2 kWh was lost through charging efficiency and running accessories while charging, I did not monitor that on each charge.

As you can see below, the average cost between Tesla and EA membership prices are significantly lower than the new Rivian prices.

I think there are some Rivian drivers who assume you have to use Rivian branded charging stations, and don't realize there are other options.

Or people who are so vehemently "anti Electrify America" that they absolutely refuse to even consider EA, and lump all the other non-first-party networks in with them.
