A long time ago, before I purchased my R1S, RAN charging was free. When Rivian started charging the cost per kWh was around $0.40 and was a no brainer to use.

Not long ago Rivian started opening up the network. At the same time they started increasing charging costs significantly, so much so, that it is not a default choice anymore.

Personally I believe they have gone too far.

My nearest RAN at Lynnwood, WA, is now $0.65.

There is a pretty good thread about this topic here. Rivian RAN pricing You are right that it's no longer the default option. The Pilot/GM/Evgo stations are now cheaper than RAN and they were some of the most expensive initially.

Introductory pricing vs regular pricing. Yes, it went up. Still not the highest reported (70s range). But if you ever use other networks you’d know it’s on par with rest of market. Carry on.

I think the new pricing is high and will cost Rivian usage. They need to go the Tesla/EA route where Rivian owners get a discount and they sell memberships for non-Rivian to get the owner price.

An example of today’s pricing around Henderson, NC

Rivian .50 kWh

EA
pass price .56 kWh
member price .42 kWh

Tesla
public .47 kWh
member/Owner .36 kWh

On my current trip, I find the above to be similar in a lot of the areas I’m going through on this current trip. I’m not avoiding the Rivian chargers but not going out of my way to use them either. I think they will see their utilization suffer.

Looking at utility rates in that area even with demand charges less than .20 a kWh so seems like there is room to be more competitive.

Rivian owners should get a discount and Rivian should offer a membership option. Tesla is the benchmark here.

It seems that monthly membership fees are for grifters. The RAN charging process should automatically detect Rivian vs non Rivian and bill accordingly. Rivian needs to implement such a seamless approach. Drive well.

I think it dependent on location. My last trip to Tahoe was $.39 in Sacramento at the REI but $.65 in Truckee.

Ours in Ca is .68 per kWh, feel like I’m getting gouged ?I’m using EV Go at .54 per kWh at peak hours which seems like a better deal compared to RAN….

Its only expensive when you don't need to charge.....when you do.....that is cheap.

I haven't charged at a public charger since Nov. 2023, only charge at home and work.

I really think discount pricing should be included with connect+ as another incentive to sign up and get that monthly/yearly income from users.

As far as the current pricing I think it is getting a bit high especially if there are other chargers that are in the same area or in areas with more food options.

I have jumped off the highway and driven a few extra miles to get to a RAN charger to support the Rivian network but if they are the same cost I'll hit up the chargers on the highway that save me 10-15 minutes.

RAN is cheaper for Rivian owners. Look at pricing for an Open RAN site where it is typically about $0.10/kWh more expensive for non-Rivians.

Can't offer a "discounted rate" until you raise rates to be on par with other open chargers.

They seem to be (smartly) slowly rolling out perks, different people will be incentivized differently. So use things like this to either keep people on it or attract new takers. Subscription Model 101
