Anyone else experience a knocking or thwaping sound with hard acceleration, especially when turning with acceleration? Also most sounds like a rotational thing as it is a set time apart each sound. Almost sounds like putting a playing card in bicycle spokes.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Best to get a video (with good audio) of the situation so you can submit to Rivian and have them tell you whether it's a safety concern or not. You can share it here as well so we can internet/armchair-diagnose.

Mine has a popping noise under hard accel/decel when turning right, and after submitting a ticket was told it wasn't a safety problem and I'd need to wait for an appt.

There was a service bulletin (not a recall) for some trucks where they put new fasteners on the rear drive train using the old fasteners torque specs and needed to make sure they were torqued down. May be worth looking into, as they had to check mine.

I've also noticed when accelerating aggressively that the back motors cause a little jolt lately, which I don't remember from before.

Get the exact time stamp of the occurrence and send to Rivian on the app.

This is a big complaint you'll find all over this forum and Reddit.

My truck did this some times before I sold it. Could never recreate it at the service center.

I always thought it was something coming from the drive shaft but always happened during hard acceleration/deceleration while turning sharp.

Yep. I had the same issue: it knocked when accelerating and turning, especially when going up any incline. It was recently repaired at a service center, but the invoice isn't very clear about what they did to fix it. It appears to be related to half shafts, but they don't list what parts were replaced.

The hub knuckle TSB seems to have mostly fixed my clunking. It's at least drastically reduced and VERY rare these days.

I have the same issue that is much more pronounced when I switch to conserve.

Was at SC to check this out - reproduced and diagnosed as half shafts. Going to replace them next month.

But what I understand most trucks have these issues - to some degree. The real problem is half shafts design to accommodate suspension travel range.

Anyway, will report back after replacement. I guess they will add washers as well. Hope this will stop knocking when accelerate/ decelerate in stop go traffic. Very annoying

My R1T had the halfshafts replaced for this issue, but it came back not long after. After another service, I was in an R1T loaner that exhibited the same noise, then our R1S started doing it. Then another loaner like a year later that would also do it.

Putting on my engineering cap, I suspect it's some kind of a design defect where the torque pressure on the sliding joint prevents it from freely sliding, and forces the axles into the extremes of the tolerance in the mating pieces.

When the noise happens, if you let off after straightening out, and then get back into throttle, it's fine again. But, if you keep on the throttle until high speed, it starts rumbling and vibrating the whole truck because it never equalizes.

This happens with my Gen1 R1T when accelerating at >70% power and in the high suspension setting. Sounds terrible. The service center said that it is normal and didn't do anything about it...

Well, not very positive ... I hope mine will be fine with half-shaft replacements and adding washers...
Rivian needs to look at the half-shaft issue in general and redesign them. So many complaints about knocking when accelerating/decelerating, etc.

I had mine in for same issue, they said it was consistent with demo R1S Tri they had, so no action taken.

only happens at > 70% throttle with AP mode (normal suspension), but not in Sport (low suspension)
