This is looking to be only reason I would pick CT over R1. I can look at R1 and need PDR.

The wife and I went to dinner the other night, picked an end of row parking spot with plenty of room to get in and out of the car, so should be safe right... wrong. We come out after dinner and I notice two dings in the rear passenger door, so I check gear guard. Yep, there she is, sweet looking older lady opens her car door carefully, but doesn't hold it and the wind grabs it slamming it into our R1S. I watch the entire video waiting for the lady pull out of the spot next to us so that I can get an angle on the license plate to file a report. Nope, Gear Guard only plays for 30 seconds which isn't enough time for the lady to get buckled up, and on her way so I can't get any identifying info on the car. That's ok, because surely when I download the event onto my USB and review it on my computer it will be a longer clip... wrong again. It's 30 seconds period, so now I ether have to file a claim which comes with a $500 deductible, or I just pay it out of pocket which is the more likely scenario. It isn't just a paintless dent repair as there are scratches from the impact as well. So far I can see no way to get more footage from Gear Guard, so absolutely unless...
I had the same experience....no notification when an event occurs and unable to see the license plate of offending vehicle. Also noticed the trim piece around the rear wheel gives letting doors his the metal of the car above.

Two quick questions for you:
  • Was the car already in that spot when you pulled in? If so, can you see the license on your DriveCam footage?
  • If it wasn't there when you pulled in, did you get a motion alert when it pulled in that would possibly allow you to see the plate?

Ah, you reject the usefulness of 1000's of recordings of you walking out to the Rivian. When I go out to my Rivian that's usually what awaits me. At least the "processing" part.

You'd think they'd cancel the recording when the vehicle unlocks. but nope. Selfies for everyone.

It also misses a lot of events.

At work I typically park between two cars, and when I walk out to my car the cars are gone. So I expect to see two videos of people driving away. But, I only see the one. Apparently it only records when it sees a human, but a vehicle itself is just as capable of leaving a dent/scratch.

So I don't get it.

I also tried to use the drivecam to prove that I wasn't guilty of speeding. This was also a let down because the video doesn't record GPS speed or any kind of speed. All you can do is use the features that go by. I went through a length process to do so (by creating a reference video), and all that did was prove that I was speeding. DOH!!.

FYI - Old people love routine so you could always do a stakeout.
lol, a stakeout is genius.

The car was already there, but Drive cam didn’t catch anything due to my approach angle. Very frustrating.

I've resorted to just parking as far as possible and walking. I drop the wife off and try and get as far away as I can (to the restaurant ;)). It's not practical in all situations but I don't mind walking. I also had to get a door imperfection at the service center repaired by the PDR guy they use and it came out great. R1S has ridiculously soft metal that will ding so keep a PDR person in mind.
Ah that won't work I'm afraid. It's a well known scientific law that the says...

Opt for solitary parking and witness cars swarm to yours as if magnetized—behold the Principle of Parking Attraction!

Long shot but, was there a recording of when she pulled in initially? Any chance the license plate was visible then?

LOL - Or you could be that guy (it would never be a female) who carries two orange construction cones in his frunk with "Warning: Roofing Nails" stenciled on them and puts them on either side of their R1...

I park away from the other cars way out where no one else is because the walk is too far. As well I park in spots next to a spot that has no spot there. That limits the dings by 50% alone. I look for the places a shopping cart may roll to.. as well the places a vehicle may cut the isle and clip a corner so to speak. This makes backing out of a space easy, there is less parked vehicles behind.

You wouldn't have been able to get any compensation in that situation anyway. Trust me, been through this before. The old lady isn't going to be held liable for a door ding, especially when the wind caused her door to be pulled out of her hand.

Do people leave their information if a door is dinged? Is this worth the time and effort? Yeah is sucks, and that is life sometimes.

You have video that proves the incident wasn't your fault, and you have to pay your deductible?
crazy.
Someone always has to pay the deductible. If there's another party at fault and they are deemed responsible, then your insurance company will go after them for your deductible. If they aren't successful for any reason, then you're responsible to pay it. Even if it's damage resulting from an "act of God", then you're stuck paying your deductlbe since the insurance company can't collect the money from God.

That's pretty funny and unfortunately true for the most part. I'm amazed that people park right next to me in the far corner of a parking lot. I can't prevent all dents and dings but I do my best with parking as far away as possible.
