"Exit truck and stay away..." DCFC battery alert

Considering the "really big" frunk, I'm waiting for an upgade (or well done hack) for a regular sized 12 volt battery. This first cousin to motorcycle battery is a joke.

I’ve had a similar 12v battery problem.



On December 30, 2023 my R1T driver screen indicated “Service 12v battery system”(photo attached). I already had a Normal, Illinois SC appointment for January 9, 2024 for a windshield replacement and powered tonneau cover replacement so I called to add the battery service to the work order.



The truck was serviced, no problem was found with the 12 volt battery system and the alarm cleared. On January 11th I drove the truck home, approximately 200 miles and the service 12v light came on again about 20 miles from home. The next morning, on January 12th I received the “Exit truck and stay away. Risk of exposure to hazardous fumes” alarm (photo attached). Also had rotten egg smell in the garage. Opened the frunk and fumes were coming from the vent (video attached).



I contacted the service group and was told to park the vehicle outside and stay out of it. Rivian sent a flatbed the same day and picked up the vehicle, transporting it to the Normal, Illinois service center. SC found the 12v battery or batteries needed to be replaced. No problems since.

That is one seriously cooked 12V battery in the video ?

I had a full size boat battery blow up in front of me as a kid.. super scary! The cloths I was wearing at the time started disintegrating as soon as they came out of the wash after the explosion.

Whenever I charge a 12V battery, I always connect the clamps, then plug in the charger... you do not want sparks anywhere near a lead acid battery!!

Not a bad idea. Still a bit concerned it occurred within seconds of plugging in to the DCFC. So its unclear if this was a 12v issue vs sensor vs other.

After 3 hard resets and a 7hr sleep, no alerts since (2 days). I've also used the same RAN yesterday albeit different charger without issue. RIDE menu diagnostic not helpful, but didn't think to do it during the alert. TBD.

Security guard/Mallcop insisted I leave the RAN chargers at 930pm since the outlet mall had just closed. No signs anywhere. Reported it twice, so hopefully that's resolved. Otherwise pretty stupid to have your only RAN in FL open 10hrs/day.

I used that Daytona RAN a few weeks back and it worked great. You might want to send Rivian a message that their chargers that are 24/7 are being highjacked by the mall cop there.

Oh my. Maybe it thought the vehicle was on fire.

Better than Tesla that would actually be on fire without warning. The good news is Rivian doesn’t use accelerants in the battery pack unlike Tesla. Battery tear downs of Teslas and Rivian’s show Tesla uses flammable materials to seal their cells in and Rivian use flame retardant sealants/insulation.
