That corresponds to 32amp charging. I've had this problem in the past, after an update the truck resets a bunch of things to defaults, including amperage to 32amps despite appearing as 48amp on the display. On the display screen in the truck, charging menu, try lowering amperage to 30 then back up to 48.

This happens to me with a Tesla wall charger, due to the heat. I find if I start it at 32A, not 48A, it will continue to charge at that level.

This is an issue with your charger.
I had the exact same behavior and talked to others with it on Discord.

Reach out to Rivian to start the process of getting a new charger under warranty.

They'll want photos of your setup to confirm the installation is to spec and will have you go through a few troubleshooting procedures (which is essentially just doing a breaker reset).

Don't throw away the box the new charger comes in, as they'll want you to send the bad one back. They didn't tell me that ahead of time, but fortunately I hadn't tossed everything when they told me.

I do not think it is his charger. I see the same behavior in the triple digit desert heat and I am not using a Rivian charger. Happened last summer, things back to normal in the cooler months and see it again now that temps are back in triple digits.

My truck lives in full sun during the day. If I need to charge during the day, it will definitely slow down. Not at night.

At L2 speeds, there are verily few reasons to derate.

Further, as I said, exact symptoms and charger was replaced under warranty.

What does anyone have to lose by reaching out to Rivian?

By the way, my replacement charger fixed the issue. Period.

Mine was doing the same thing after the last update so I did a full reset, left button on steering and emergency flashers and it’s charging at full speed now even when it’s over 90 out.

I was planning on posting a similar thread on this topic. I am also in Arizona, garage temp is hot even at night.

I schedule charges between 11pm-5am. I have noticed the charging rate drop to 7.2kw after about 30 min. When this happens the driver display will have a message that states “charging slowed due to charger handle temp” or something like that. The message is not displayed in the app, only on the dash.

I have had my R1T for 2 years now, this is my third summer with the truck in AZ. This is new, never has charging slowed due to the handle temp of my Rivian EVSE.

This has got to be related to a recent update.

I am having the same level 2 charging derate issue in the Phoenix heat on my new ‘23 T. Charge starts at 10.8kW than reduces to 7.4kW after a bit. I just got the truck and this was literally my first charge with it so I don’t have past performance to compare it to. Came from a model y though and never had any charging issues in the heat. I’m using a Tesla gen 3 wall charger and A2Z stellar adapter that’s installed inside my garage. I’m getting the same charging slowed due to handle temp message. I was starting to think the adapter was the issue (probably doesn’t help) but seems like others are having the same issue so maybe it’s not the adapter. I know it’s not the wall charger because I unplugged the truck and adapter then plugged directly into a model y and charged from 30-70 at 11kW with no issue. And the wall charger has been solid with no issues on other cars in the az heat for over the last year. This would be awesome if it was a software thing that could be corrected. 99% of my charging is at home. Any advice for the Phx heat? Beside move, haha

I get this all the time during summer when my garage is 95 degrees or 100 degrees or higher after Rivian released an update last summer.

I have this warm plug message on my OEM Rivian charger with no adapters.

This is perfectly normal during summer. I don’t have this issue once temps are no longer triple digits.

I just got back from a road trip last night and plugged in at home in San Diego where it was a pleasant 70 degrees outside (charger is in driveway). My setup has always charged at 9kw (Grizzl-e unit) and I got the “charging slowed” message for the first time and it was still going at something like 4.7kW this morning when I got up. I did not install the update yet as I didn’t have WiFi on my -3 week road trip. I did find it strange that it charged slower than I am used to, despite it being relatively cool out. The handle and cable were not warm to the touch at all.

Thanks for the info. Now that I know is pretty normal in the heat I’ll embrace my spot in the warm plug family.

In May 2024 in Portland OR, I was charging around noon in full sun at an 11.5 kW Rivian charger.

It slowed due to heat, to around 8 kW.

It happens, even in the Pacific Northwest....

Best to all!

Are you using an adapter for charging or is this a native J1772 plug? I’ve heard of throttling charge rates when adapters get hot. However if you are directly plugged in, AC should be steady at 11.4kw provided you have a 48A charger.
