I updated the design and uploaded to Thingiverse as a remix of mcf12's design. Printed the compass in yellow "silver over yellow" on this version, will try the silver on yellow later

I actually have never requested to print something like this through a printing service. I checked out a couple options and there were a whole bunch of questions around materials to use and what not. Any advice on best way to get these printed? Thanks

Can one of you who has these take a side picture of the entire vehicle with them in?

I haven’t either. Sorry.

At home I print using PLA, or PETG (might called PET) or TPU. PLA has the most colors available by far, and is the easist to print. Mechanical properties, heat resistance are poor, prob 50 or 60 deg C max for PLA. You can get many PETG colors also. Good to 70-80C. PETG is pretty easy to print, and has better mechanical properties than PLA, heat resistance, impact resistance, and is a little more resilient. TPU is flexible, so not useful here. So printing these at home, I’ll use PLA or PETG, and consider the parts disposable, prob last months to a year or two. Only cost about 30 cents each to print. PETG prob preferable. Neither has great UV resistance, so will degrade slowly in sunlight. I could send you one to try if you want.

Going to an outside firm, I’d prob request ABS (think “legos:”) or Nylon (electical connectors in cars), but i don’t know the color selections, or how the parts actually look after printing (ie glossy?, defects, etc) Both have good mechanical properties (ie impacT strenght) and good heat resistance. I’ve used ABS once or twice, but only have white, and it needs to be printed in a well ventilated area (residual styrene I think). ASA looks like a good choice also, on paper,
good mechanicals and UV resistance, but I don’t have any experienice with it to say much more. Once I get my truck and can print and try out myself, I might buy more ABS to make these, if PETG doesn’t hold up

I only have experience with FDM printing, ie feeding thin strands (0.2mm) through an extruded nozzle, and laying them down hot (200C or higher) on a build plant, so you can see thin layers in the part if you look close. SLA printing looks better, uses plastics that cure in light after being printed, might be an option if you want a part that is glossy. I know there are other 3d printing options, but not familiar at all with them. ‘

Nice design! Thanks.

I'll have a R1T w 21" wheels someday, I guess after the Forest Edge leather plants mature..... With apologies, I modified the design so the compass was an insert I could print separately and do filament swaps to change colors. Friction fit, and added a small flange on the back of the insert so i could glue it in place also. Need to come up with clean way to add a bevel to the top of the compass that better mimics the Rivian design and is still printable, and improve the friction fit tolerance.

I used polyalchemy Lucid pearl PLA for the silver, has a metallic look, used a silk gold PLA for the yellow. PLA doesn't have great mechanicals, or UV resistance, but you can get about any color you want. So I will consider these disposable. Might make some with R1T or LE lettering on the inserts and try other colors. The prints here are draft versions, might clean up a little if I print in a higher quality mode, but prob won't change too much.

I "liked" your print on Thingiverse. I'm inclined to use Prusa's print library more these days, growing substantially, and works a lot better than thingiverse site.

Very nice. I don’t know why Rivian doesn’t offer these.

Looks great. The 21s look soooooooo much better with the aero covers out. I can't really imagine ever putting them in honestly.
Agreed. Now to figure out if I want to powder coat black or just leave as is. They look great in person though

Do you mind sharing how you printed these? I would like to get some but the options on printing through a service are crazy.

Chiming in: when ever my R1S arrives (likely in about a year), I will be looking to find someone to buy these from. These are a good start, and if they were all that was available, I would get them. However, I am hoping by then you can buy:
- a 3d printed wheel cap with the raised yellow / gold logo so that I can remove the aero inserts
- a 3d printed organizer for the area between the two front seats.

I had great luck buying something similar for my ID.4 that just affixes to the ground with velcro between the two front seats.
I printed one as you describe. Here is the picture. Didn't spend too much time on filing and clean up as I have no vehicle to attach it to (1H23, RB, BM, Max, 21"). Happy to send it to someone if they want to try it. I am in San Diego/Encinitas if there is anyone near by to try it.
