Current charging costs?

I have a question for those of you who don't charge at home. Given the current spiking gas costs, are you guys seeing any kind of price changes in the EV charging stations? I am curious. Currently I only charge at home so I have no idea what's going on out there. All I know is it is more expensive to charge away from home.

Price for electricity is gonna vary more region to region than it does with gas depending on how it's produced (solar, hydro, nat. gas, coal, etc) so it will most likely be harder to get a consensus on this one.

That being said, the RAN nearest me seems to be about the same as the last time I checked (which was months ago), and the Tesla Supercharger a little bit further away is a bit more than the RAN.... which some might consider abnormal.

While the rates vary on location and brand, I will say, I've never seen wild fluctuations at a single location. Maybe once or twice a year at most (variable time of use not included)

Tesla has increased Supercharger fees at least 3 times in past year and half. It has also moved to a demand based pricing scheme instead of time-of-day. I stayed up late one Saturday night to try and get lowest rate, only to have another beat me to it by minutes, which bumped me to the next tier… 48¢. I don’t bother waiting anymore. Membership enrollment fee is still the same. Across the various networks, in SoCal, it’s usually 55~65¢/kWh.

0.42¢ per kWh at most level 2 chargepoints near me in SoCal. There are a few .30¢ options by the hour if you have the station to yourself but you have to get lucky that no one else pulls up to occupy the same tandem unit and cut your speed in half, which effectively doubles the price.

neither of which as good as the 0.24¢ off peak I get at home.

Whenever I drive out to Palm Springs I notice fairly cheaper public options, which is nice. So yes, point being heavily dependent on where you are. I assume CA one of the most expensive regions.

Family out in AZ pays .11¢ per kWh at home.

The only real DCFC in town is a brand new Tesla station that charges $0.44/kwh for members. The other is a 50kwh at the electric company that charges by minute so at max rate it’s $0.24/kWh which is about $0.10/kwh cheaper than residential electric costs.

Kansas City: I get $0.15 at home and it ranges from $0.42 to $0.60 at the DCFC chargers around me. So more than gas which is $3.29 right now. I use the shortcut of moving the decimal place so $3.29 gas is $0.329 electric. I know that is not quite right but it is close. I feel for you guys on the coasts that have much higher prices for both your electricity and gas.

I’ve used this one as well. I realize they’re more than when first opened, but RAN prices seem much more reasonable nowadays compared to the competition.

Is that an SRP rate? We’re on APS which is 5.1 cents off peak in summer. For winter we have 5.1 and 3.1 during different off peak hours.

While I mostly charge at home, I haven't seen any increases in fast charging rates.

I suspect that this reflects relatively flat electricity rates. These are generally set by utility companies that adjust on 6 month or annual basis and subject to commission approval.

There is a floating "spot price" market for electricity, but I don't think the fast chargers participate in that market. If they did, we would see constant wild fluctuation in charger rates even when there is not a crisis.

I just finished an 1,134 mile round trip and used 539kWh of electricity per the odometer.

I left home with a 100% charge, and pulled back in with 12% remaining on the battery.

I spent $229 on public charging, for a blended rate of $0.19/mile.

The process of applying my EA pass membership was as clear as mud, so I screwed that up and got the plug & charge rate. It was my first time using that. I might be able to get ~$25 back if I call customer service.

Prices seem to have come down a little from where they were a year ago. Most chargers seemed to be in the $0.5-$0.6 range a year ago. Now options seem available in the ballpark of $0.45 in places where competition exists.
