On the one hand I hate paying subscriptions on something I already own…

But on the other hand, it’s a new era of Software defined vehicles and I can’t imagine any car will be sold without a subscription plan over the next few years. It’s really no different than how the smart phones and app stores evolved.

Of all the subscriptions I pay for on a monthly basis, this is one of the least annoying. I love my truck.
^ this x 100. Get used to it as all manufacturers are going this route.

This stuff is a crack-up; my last thoughts on this earth will be, "I sure wish I didn't pay for "connect+!"
Distracted driving will get you every time.

If they offered AA/Carplay as part of connect+any would sign up. $15 is expensive. Tesla only charges $10. So they are going to charge $15 for the ability to cast from your mobile device, listen to integrated audio apps, and use the hotspot. I may go a month or two without it to see how it works but ultimately I will sign up at least one vehicle for sure.

Unless I'm missing something, the announcement, email, and reference web page are pretty light on details.
Apple music, Audible, and wifi hotspot seem like the only call-outs.
I don't see definitive info on whether I can use my existing unlimited phone plan tethered, if Nav gets updates, what remote vehicle commands are/aren't available, what driver+ functionality is or is not impacted...
Google cast and Youtube "coming s00n."
I guess we'll have to wait and see if there is $150 worth of value there...

Yeah, $10/month or 99/year would be more reasonable and more equivalent to adding a phone hotspot

Rivian is going to keep adding things in. I hope they don't raise the price as that happens but they probably eventually will.

That said, I'm constantly amazed at the people who go on and on about buying a $100,000 car but won't pay $15/mo for the data they use in it.
I had Netflix since DVD days. They took away
DVDs
popular movies
Increased from 10/month to $25
Added ads to cheaper option
Password sharing (Me and My family would barely use it once per day)
Popular shows

I finally cancelled, because I could use the $300/year for better things. I will get it 1-2x an year for when I need it. It will be the same with connect+. I will get it if/when we need it for road trips. Else, I am paying for something without using it. I might as well increase contributions to UNICEF.

... I can just about pay for the annual subscription through the insurance discounts I would receive for having live monitoring.
Wait. What?

That's a thing? What carrier offers that? And did it confirm that Gear Guard live view on your phone qualifies for that discount? I'm very interested in this, thanks.

Same. I will happily pay 14.99 for a fully connected car. It costs nearly that to add LTE to an Apple Watch and this offers a lot more.

My Thoughts...

I do think they are shooting off their nose here.

Most other manufactures, legacy or not, offer connected services for 3 years with purchase. We just purchased for my company a 2023 Chevy 1500 Trailboss. The remaining 2.5 years of connected services are still free.

Those that managed to get their pre-purchase back in 2022 have been streaming/whatever for 2+ years now. Old adage of "For me, but not for thee".

I get they are just trying to turn profitable. This, I think, is not the way to do it.

I know I will not be doing it (at least at this pricing).
I have WiFi at work that my truck connects to as soon as I get to work.
I have WiFi at home that my truck connects to as soon as I get home.
I, and my wife, have free unlimited tethering thru my phone, and its 5G.

Wheres my incentive here?
I can still watch YouTube streaming thru my tethered device. I can still unlock/lock/vent/hood/liftgate thru the app. Maps will still work. I can still do Heat/AC thru the app. I dont use any of the apps except Alexa, which I can still do thru Tethering.
I loose nothing as far as I can tell, and save $15/150.

This argument of "you bought a 100k vehicle, and you complain about $15" is really f**king annoying. Maybe you can handle being nickel and dimed around your entire life, and your bank account doesnt care. My bank account does care.

I mean, it kinda looks like Rivian is giving everyone $40/mo worth of connected services by default if we're making that comparison. GM also charges $25/mo for unlimited data outside of the plan if that's all you wanted.

No argument there... Except its free for the first 3 years.

Also, OnStar is being discontinued.

Also note that Tesla’s premium connectivity, which has also been mentioned, doesn’t include hotspot.
