In eager anticipation of ordering an R2 Premium, the reality of needed an in-home level 2 charger is obvious. According to the Rivian Store, their level 2 charger is currently at $800 without installation. I have found several reputable companies offering level 2 charges for almost half the cost.

What are your feelings. Should I use a Rivian charger, or is it safe to go with another? In either case, the charger and 50A 240V line from my circuit panel will be installed by me.

Thanks!

Here's a good place to start. EVSE review.
I've been using a basic $320 Grizzl-e for 5 years and it's been an excellent, reliable charger. I got $150 of that purchase price back as a rebate from my electric utility.
The charger is not internet connected, but Ive never needed that feature. The R1, and Tesla before it, are connected and programmable for time-of-day scheduling. Duplicating those features in my EVSE was a waste of money in my opinion. I've never missed having those features.
Congrats on your new Rivian!

Edit: I missed the "R2" portion of your post. You'll have a native NACS port. So I recommend you shop for a model that has a NACS plug. Charging your car on a regular basis by using a J1772-to-NACS adapter adds cost, and a potential source of overheat or failure.

Plenty of good choices out there for home charging solutions. Tesla, Rivian, Grizzl-E, Chargepoint etc etc.

I have owned a Voltie (formally Jukebox) for 3 years, works perfectly.

Check with your utility company, county, or even city for rebates on EVSE’s. Watch Tom’s reviews on State of Charge too.

I have an Emporia and a Lectron and both work wonderfully. This thread that I've followed over on the Cadillac Lyriq forum has lots of input and experiences.

I second any recommendation for Grizzl-e products - I finally upgraded from using a portable charger in my garage to their 40-amp unit, and it's been great. Plus, no unnecessary 'smart' features!

This Tom Moloughney at State of Charge has lots of information and testing of EV chargers. Might be worth looking at his testing.

Does the specific charger software control setting charge level caps like not going above 80% day to day or is that controlled by the vehicle? I've never owned an electric vehicle of any kind so this is maybe an easy answer for anyone with more knowledge than me.

I highly recommend The Emporia Level 2 charger. Its rock solid. It hasn't failed even once to charge my R1T Quad.

When I bought it in 2023 it was the least expensive UL-certified charger out there. I would not get a non-UL certified product. The mobile app has tons of details and features as well.
