This doesn't make sense, mainly because the subscription applies to Gen 1 as well. So if they are charging Gen 1 owners for connect+ the same amount they are charging for Gen 2 owners your theory doesn't match up with what's going on.
I think its more of a suite. Gen 2 gives you more ability, therefore do more things, I am fine with gen 2 getting the more advanced features being a subscription, but i believe they are potentially locking basic features in with advanced features to create a value proposition for Gen2 and hopefully convert Gen 1 owners to Gen 2.

Changing Gen 1 to a subscription, when it wasn't sold that way would cause anger in the other direction. I don't want much, I just want an adaptive cruise control system that is stable. Nothing more.

He's referring to the RAP+ subscription. It hasn't begun yet, but they're planning on charging a subscription for autonomy features on gen 2
This is the first I've heard of that. Nothing precludes them from extending it to Gen 1 if Gen 1 had the hardware capability to get the same features. No reason makes business sense for Rivian to exclude Gen 1 vehicles from features they can monetize outside of Gen 1 not having the hardware capability. There are 75K+ Gen 1's rolling around and a subscription ADAS service is even more reason for Rivian to roll out those features if the vehicles were capable.

I guess I'm confused about the utility then if you're already in adaptive cruise (unless it shut itself off)? Why do you need a chime if the car will move anyway once the vehicle in front of you moved?
I think the chime occurs when acc is off. If you sit too long after spacing has increased between you and the vehicle in front of you it will chime. That’s my interpretation

If it's like the Tesla system, it has nothing to do with adaptive cruise.

It's a chime you turn on that's always active that lets you know if the light has turned green (it only chimes if the light goes green and you don't begin to move forward within about a second or so).

No. It isn't tied to the light at all (at least the way myself and most others are reading it). If it did what the Tesla did and actually worked from the light that is awesome, and would apply when you're the first car in line. But as it reads now, it is only if you're behind a car and it's based on that lead car's movement, which acc does now anyway.

The highlighted green part is the key. While basic features can be overlooked, I think the major reason Gen 1 isn't getting more features is hardware limitations. I've had a Rivian long enough to remember back in 2022/ early 23 when Rivian was pushing to expand its Gen 1 ADAS capabilities, yet it never came to fruition.

With Rivian monetizing ADAS for Gen 2 they would be incentivized to port chargeable features into Gen 1 if Gen 1 could have those features. I believe Rivian tried and failed to introduce better assistance to the gen 1s. I think at this point Rivian cannot tweak it enough to make a difference so they've moved on to a system that has the abilities to do what they've always planned on doing.

Most of the cool stuff is Gen2. Good update but makes me want my R2 even more.

Am I the only one that sets adaptive cruise to like 10mph over the speed limit in stop and go traffic or the city so that I don't have to keep stopping and going?
I suspect you might be in the minority here. Day to day I rarely use cruise control in the city. If I'm getting stopped a lights, it's usually just a couple lights.

RAP+ features will be paid, RAP is free. All of Gen 1's capabilities fall into the RAP category, so it will not be paid.

You should try it! It's not just for the lights, you're almost always behind another car in traffic and it's super helpful. I find it way more useful in the city than on the highway. If you end up being the lead car just switch it off if you approach a red light.

In my Mustang Mach E I was more inclined to do it in city, since it allowed for lane centering too. But I guess I just don't feel the draw as much if I have to steer anyway hahah

I love my Rivian R1S, Gen 1, I'm going to keep this thing for as long as possible. I like most things about the brand and what they are doing. The driver+ , and that they overpromised its ability are my only complaint.

Thanks for the info. Depending on price I may or may not subscribe. The lane change thing is nice, though; I'd hate to give it up.
