FWIW, from a chat I had with SC staff last month it looks like they have hired contractors in some locations to do routine (lower skill) jobs like tire rotations and 12v battery swaps. Hopefully that is keeping the costs down a bit. Might also be that they are absorbing some of the cost as a way of acknowledging this was a design and sourcing flaw. Just my speculation.
I think it's more likely the latter than the former in this case if anything simply because the same SC recently quoted me $300 for a tire rotate and balance.

My appointment last month was for tire rotation. SC did it for $60.

Tires should not need rebalancing after rotation if already balanced.

I got the notification on Monday that my battery needs to be replaced (32 months, 50k miles) and scheduled an appt for a week from today. Service called me to move up the appt due to urgency and I'm now scheduled for noon tomorrow (hopefully when I leave work today it's not kaput). Quote from service was $419 to replace the battery, which is expensive but not terrible.

Maybe they got feedback from others that the replacement cost is prohibitively expensive.
Most likely that's the price for a single 12v battery vehicle. For dual 12v is double at least.

They have to do a reset via the service menu when you disconnect the 12V, meaning you will need a service appointment even if you replace. And make sure you disconnect the HV at the fireman’s loop 😉

That is not entirely true.

There are methods to replace the 12v without interrupting 12v power.

Disconnecting the HV does not require a special reset.

Current versions of the software allow resetting 12v errors via the RIDE menu.

Was just going by what the remote tech told me yesterday, I asked him how to get into the service menu and he said it’s a one-time use generated code they get. Not familiar with ride menu, but that’s cool (I watched the whole process so I could do once out of warranty). On the HV, you can totally do by removing the fireman’s loop at the plug … but was warned you really don’t want to not do this 😉

I have done that a few times with no negative impact. Should be fine unless they changed something in the software. Haven't seen anyone else reporting issues.

Sounds like you mobile tech is taking the approach that customers shouldn't touch anything on the truck

He was nice enough about it, but I’d put this at 🍌🍌 as opposed to a standard battery replacement in an IC car. There are multiple connections at each block that bolts to the battery, he also jumped the positives when connecting to balance L+R load. Not serious wrenching though, my hobby is restoring old Land Cruisers.

Where do I read more on this RIDE interface?

Do you mean that the head is 8 mm and the hole size is actually M5? I am in the process of making an adapter for aftermarket batteries, and want to confirm I didn't make a mistake on my adapter thread size.

Not really. An M8 nut would thread onto the terminals under the plastic but wouldn't work with the battery terminal.

I didn't remove ANYTHING so I did not thread it on the battery terminal directly.

Glad I checked. As we are discussing two different things. I'm asking about the actual 12v battery terminal connections not the ones rivian adds on top to connect all the modules.

The physical oem battery terminal is an M5 thread hole.

Thank you!
