I saw reported somewhere that a News reviewer mentioned customer deliveries starting on May 4th.
I don't think customer deliveries would start in May. They aren't even letting us use the configurator until June. So I'm not sure how anyone would take delivery of an R2 before then.

Maybe for current R1 owners willing to pick up in Normal? 🤷🏽‍♂️

Rivian counts employee sales as "customer deliveries" so there will be some "customer deliveries" by May since there have been reports of early deliveries happening already.

It's still an employee beta testing process in April and May just with production vehicles (probably incentivized like with R1). Just so the rest of us regular customers don't have major issues in June. At least that's the gist of what Wassym Bensaid said in one of the Out of Spec interviews.

They are still sales - the employees have to pay for the vehicles, even if they are discounted or have an incentive attached. Same thing happened with R1.

For those of us who were here back before R1 "deliveries" happened... the R1's were sold to employees who were under NDA's to keep quiet regarding defects. No "beta testing", these were full production vehicles that were sold at a discount to buyers that Rivian could control. As far as we could tell, no major changes were made to the vehicles that were delivered to retail customers after the early Rivian employees got their vehicles. As far as what Wassym says, IMO he's as bad as Satya Nadella and Sam Altman... lots of talk about future features with much of it never actually materializing or materializing in the next gen vehicles.

“No major changes” could be correct, but having done large OEM manufacturing design and production I would bet that there were ~ 1000 “changes” made in the initial 90-180 days (>50% upfront) to all manner of piece parts, cable harnesses, connectors, molding, automation controls, alignment, Etc AN yes even various suppliers for some things small and even some things bigger than one would expect. It’s never stable and certainly not as production is ramping.

Benefits them not having to actually pay to ship em, and customers can get them ASAP, but from what i’ve heard they still charge the destination fee
They are required by law to charge everyone the same for each model, regardless of local.

Thanks for clarifying, I wasn’t aware of the reason. This’ll be my first D2C car purchase so it’s always been something I never look twice at.

Any word about the Glen Burnie SC?

On service centers in the area have reduced wait times/ lead times but they are still 30 days out with the occasional appointments being allowed in the same week. For R2 the big shift will be to mobile service.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

Buying direct is absolutely superior to the bullshit you put up with at dealerships. Although when buying direct they do still charge you a destination fee (by law) and a document fee (by choice), which varies by state. At least it’s all up front and you can put your money down and pay all of your fees in advance. Then you just have to go to the showroom, sign a few papers, and you’re good to go. You’re not trapped at the dealership “negotiating” (ie waiting for one or more parties to be worn down before the deal is complete) for hours on end. Hard pass. I’m never going back to that nonsense.

Buying your primary residence needs to move in this direction. I say primary residence because investors would own everything if there weren’t stop-measures and caps to slow them down. They’re the ones artificially driving the cost of homes up, by exchanging properties with one another. It’s the same circular spending that’s funding AI.
