Future of R1S?

Just celebrated a year with our wonderful R1S. Based off our experience, a family member was ordering a new R1S and they could not order the cheapest silver color (they were told they were "pausing production on it"). Then they wanted the blue...nope. Finally went with the green, but I am wondering what is going on? The quote from my family member is "they said they aren't making the big ones anymore." Is the R1S being discontinued? I would think the number of colors would be increasing, not decreasing for a model that is only now hitting its stride. I haven't seen anything about R1x being slowed down/discontinued, but this has me worried. In particular, our large extended family needs the seats.

r1 and r2 built at same factory so probably prioritizing r2 production and release at this time? i recently had to choose an inventory vehicle as the lead time for my desired config was 3 months or something like that.

No there aren't any announcements that production of the R1 platform was being phased out. Considering they haven't officially started shipping the R2, if they discontinued the R1 they wouldn't have anything but the EDV to sell at least for another week or two.

Looking at the Rivian website I see a dual, standard battery, in LA silver available (according to the website) in less than a week? I see more expensive models with Max batteries and three motors on the opening page listing inventory? I'm not sure what your relative is looking at?

My guess is it's more about production planning than anything else.

With Rivian heavily focused on getting the R2 launched, it wouldn't surprise me if they're simplifying configurations, colors, and options to reduce complexity and improve efficiency overall. It could also be something as simple as supply constraints or temporarily prioritizing the R2 right now.

I'd be pretty surprised if the R1 was going anywhere. The "not making the big ones anymore" comment is odd for sure and sounds more like a sales tactic to push the R2?

R1 Dual Standard is officially going away (my guess is to reduce overlap with R2). Perhaps there was some miscommunication/misunderstanding around that. R1 going away completely would be a massive stock price impacting change for Rivian, something that a publicly traded company would need to formally disclose - not leak out through sales/service channels.

Makes perfect sense. The Standard needs to go now that the R2 is here.

As of right now the R1 isn't going anywhere. not sure what that person experienced but I can configure all the colors on the website and I can find plenty in inventory. The factory may be limiting colors based on R2 paint priority but the R1 will be around for a bit, as far as we call can tell.

I would imagine when the R2 gets LIDAR so will the R1. Could the R2 steering wheel end up on the R1, sure. Anecdotes from a non-Rivian person on ordering doesn't really mean much.

No announcements, but they're probably just batching production of certain R1 color/option combinations as they start getting the R2 vehicles through the paintshop with different colors.

The R1 will be around for a long while. It's still their high-end vehicle, which is important to the brand.

LA Silver transitioning to Esker Silver similar to ElCap -> HMG?? Thats what I’d do.

Love to see a mechanical/electric damper suspension on the R1 + optional Air/Hydraulic System. Keep those family hauler/road trip vehicles going.

i agree, it's probably a temporary reduction in R1 production while the R2 ramps up. It could even be labor related - all hands on deck for R2 build training and ramp up, etc.

I’d be surprised as well, they have always said the R1 was the flagship. For sure sales will go down with the R2 as an option now but there will still be the three row crowd out there to service.

Unless they would pull a Tesla? They killed both their flagships. Though Tesla is obviously a much more mature company.

This. The R1 Dual Standards are being phased out, not the R1S or the R1T. I think it has something to do with the LFP battery not working well with charging and BMI, a subpar range, and/or distancing the R1S more from the R2 pricewise (I’ve heard various theories online from multiple channels.)

Anyway, the R1S is alive and well for now. Rivian wants to keep selling these if they can. It’s possible that the R2 will cannibalize some of the R1S’ sales, but eventually I’d imagine they’d refresh the R1 line with updated features like the RAP1 + LiDar, drop glass, the haptic halo wheels, etc. Not before they make me an R3X though.
