I've had an S as a loaner a few times, and came from a Q7 and a Yukon in past vehicles. Totally get the space of an SUV. I will admit though, I think I would miss the gear tunnel.

Oldest and I go snowboarding a lot. The Gear tunnel makes a PERFECT place to put our boots and boards. We took the loanerR1S once, and it was far less convenient to throw the stuff in the hatch there. Still worked just fine, just the gear tunnel was super easy/nice.

Between those kind of edge use cases and the ride on the R1T's being a little better, I'm not sure I would go to an S. They do park easier, and IMO look a little nicer though!
Same for us on action sports. Loved the simplicity of the MTB pad on the tailgate, skis in the bed, boots in the tunnel., pad in the tunnel when not using it, etc etc and storage cubbies everywhere.

With the S, I *had* to invest in crossbars, ski racks, and hitch MTB bike rack. G.A.S. is a slippery slope! :p

People like me that let a bucket fly out? Give me a break. You think because I made an off hand comment about watching something like that happen that I also don't strap stuff down that could actually be a hazard.

Call me out all you want, you're making wild safety assumptions over a sarcastic comment.
Flying objects make people swerve, dumbass.

Don't like being called out - tough shit.

I love the bed, the flap, electric cover, all of it. All of my uses are well met, from firewood to camping gear to moving a storage shed. I don’t understand the OP at all.

I'm considering one of the non slip mats, however many times the slippery plastic is good.

A friend was killed on his motorcycle due to a loose load. I said the driver should be charged with manslaughter.

When I had a T, the bed was plenty good for my uses. The tailgate was rattly, I will give you that. However, I learned that a move is much easier with the proper equipment, and when I moved down here, I purchased a 7'x16' enclosed trailer. You can get in one trip what would take 6 with the bed only, and with a loading ramp, heavy objects can be wheeled in.

I helped my cousin move with it, and getting all his bigger furniture in it was a breeze.

TBH, renting a Uhaul is so much easier. Even airport runs are sometimes better in SUVs because it rains all the time in PNW. Trucks are good for carrying dirty or heavy stuff. Towing too, but I don't do that and let's not go there 😉

Then use them.

Packing properly and securing the load is 100% your responsibility, both by common sense and by law. There is zero excuse for anything ever flying out of the bed. Your haste and laziness isn't an excuse for potentially causing another vehicle to swerve or jam on the brakes, or get damage or into an accident due to your flying objects.
But I love watching my propane tanks bouncing around back there.

P.S. I hope the OP's bandsaw made it in one piece.

Cheap option - I use yoga mats in the bed to make it non-slip. Cut one down to fit under my plug-in cooler, works like a charm.
I ordered one of these bed mats (checks notes) approximately 1 day after taking delivery of my truck, lol. 😆

On my old Chevy trucks I'd just use the spray-in bedliner over everything. Since that isn't an option in a Rivian, a bed mat is a must (imo).

Also carry a net, a tarp, a moving blanket, a bag full of ratchet straps, and two tubes full of assorted length bungee cords in the frunk and in the under-bed storage.

Have helped waaaay too many friends move over the years to not have all this stuff. Not to mention collecting & hauling random pieces of scrap metal, trash, etc. A longer bed is one of the few things I'd consider trading my current truck for.

Have used our R1S to do several college moves, love it. Has been a massive improvement over our previous SUV

Yeah, I'm considering that one, with the hexes. For the times I want things to just stay in place easier. I don't think the bed needs any protection since it's really just one huge plastic bedliner. For now I'm using a cargo bar to help with my most common usage which is to put a few things in the back 1/4 or 1/3 of the bed only.

Oh, no doubt. We have movers coming for the main furniture. We're only moving 6 miles away, and just trying to get the random crap from the basement, and misc other stuff over there before the movers show up.

Good chance we're gonna grab a Uhaul trailer this weekend for all the reasons you mentioned.

LOL! I used mine to move last spring...smaller stuff like you. The bed is definitely small, but overall I found all the internal storage spaces pretty useful.

I've jammed the tailgate shut twice because of the asinine tailgate flap thing hitting a box/tote/etc.
Thinking about it now, idk how I never had this problem.

The tailgate sounds like it's off a 1950's C10, it's hollow, and metallic and sounds like a crappy after thought.
Havent noticed this either. mine seems about average. Most tailgates are hollow. I guess the aluminum could make it feel more so...but you may have something loose.

The frunk is oddly shaped and nothing, and I mean NOTHING sits flush on the bottom.

The underseat storage is just large enough to fit one thing, and then is oddly shaped like the frunk
I used the frunk and underseat storage to pack in clothes, shoes, small electronics etc...worked great for that...obviously not great at holding larger, non-maliable items.

The constant "lock/unlock" with my phone in my pocket at the new house is wildly agitating
leaving the phone in the truck means the HVAC runs while we're loading/unloading, ugh.
If I'm at home, and the truck goes to sleep while I'm loading, then I hop in, I have to repair BT for the key to work. WTF?!?!
You can geofence this to disable while you're home. I had the same complaint and had to turn mine off at home. Still works as normal while away from home.

it's this side of impossible to get into the bed with the truck at standad height. Even in "kneel" height it's a jump. I never thought I would miss a feature as simple as the step built into the bumper of my Sierra.
I use the gear tunnel doors to get up into the bed. Idk if that works in every situation, but usually does for me. I use them to put my bike on the bike rack etc also. Love them.

Congrats on the new house!
