Yeah, definitely going to hit up fiverr next time I have to edit an hour+ video.

Isn't this thing messing with the motors and causing faults?
I'm one of the ones with a few faults, likely because I didn't run dedicated power as is now suggested. It happens about 1 in every 200 uses. Well worth having to put in park to reset when happens.

OVerall the system is awesome. Easy to take back and forth between T and S and have a relaxing drive.

Similarly I have never had a major fault. Most of my faults are the same types of faults that owners seem to be experiencing even without a Comma installed.

After this test, my wife is seriously considering putting a Comma in the Tesla. It's just a bitter pill to swallow after spending SO MUCH money on Enhanced Autopilot.

AI video summaries are often like asking a person to watch a foreign film then explain it another language they don’t speak. I used my AI powered browser to check the validity of this summary, and it said not great. I then told it to ask Grok, which argued with Perplexity which was arguing with the shitty ChatGPT summary above.

If I just created a singularity, sorry.

I’ll watch the video later if we survive. I can summarize it in French. Most people don’t know that I mostly think in French although I speak English. One day I hope to learn French so I’ll know WTF I’m thinking.
Ya made me think of the Steven Wright comment about locking a humidifier and a dehumidifier in a room together and letting them battle it out.

🤣

Which Tesla Hardware and version. HW3 or4?
For $99/mth FSD with HW4 and version 13 (ver14 next week) will blow everything else away.

Her Model Y is a HW4. We are definitely looking into doing a video with FSD and ranking it similarly. I remember my wife tried out FSD when they were doing the free trials and we definitely weren't blown away. And with a $99/month price tag, it's also hard for me to imagine how that will compete well on price.

Still, it'll be an interesting video to do and I'm curious where the score would fall in comparison to Openpilot.

I haven't tried FSD in a couple years, so maybe I could be blown away now. Because AP and the Comma do so much, so well, I don't care about FSD at all. If 95% of my workload is taken off, which they do, I really don't care about the 5%. It's effectively zero work to turn into the parking lot, or make that right turn. And with OpenPilot's cooperative steering, most of the time it's perfectly seamless and I can even let the car self-drive in the parking lot! I've let OpenPilot drive down a trail or a wash for miles. It's that good.

That's kind of where I'm at as well. If I can drive from Fort Worth to Houston (~270 miles) on Openpilot with 98% of the drive done hands free, I'm not sure how much more benefit FSD is going to give me.

Still, I'm willing to be open minded and give it a chance.

Well, to answer to your question, best would be to try it !!!

Basically Tesla AutoPilot is mostly a smart Cruise control.
While, still up to some limits, FSD is really driving the car.

See for example this video:

Note: It would be interesting to see if Openpilot will be used for autonomous driving by some taxi companies the same way as Tesla FSD with RoboTaxi.

To be fair, my wife tried it back when they had the free trials.

I watched the video you linked to. I can definitely agree FSD looks much better than Autopilot, but a lot of the things he mentioned losing going back to Autopilot from FSD aren't really applicable to Openpilot. For example, driver monitoring - Openpilot already uses visual driver monitoring so that seems about on-par.

I'm still curious to put them up against each other, though. The question is, if I can already do a ~270 mile drive on Openpilot 98% hands-free for $1500, is that remaining 2% (if FSD could do 100% engagement which I'm not sure it can) worth a $6500 premium? Just a rhetorical question that I would try to answer in the video.

Quick question maybe you can help with. Logistically, when we did the Autopilot/Openpilot comparison video we drove a specific route to test in various different road scenarios. To keep things consistent and fair between the last test, can we do that same route with FSD? Can you program a specific route with FSD? What would be the best way to set this up? Specifically this is the route we took:

I used Google search and entered the following sentence:

"Can you program a specific route using the Tesla phone App and then send the route to a Tesla navigation?"

And I got the following answer:

Sharing from another Map App (e.g., Google Maps)
  1. Open the map app: of your choice (e.g., Google Maps) on your phone.
  2. Enter your desired destination: and plan your route.
  3. Select the "Share" icon .
  4. Choose the Tesla app: from the list of options to share with.
  5. The route will now be sent to your Tesla's navigation system.
Using the Tesla App
  1. Open: the Tesla app on your phone.
  2. Scroll down: to find the "Locations" section.
  3. Tap "Navigate": and enter your desired destination.
  4. Add any stops: or make edits to the route by tapping "Edit Trip".
  5. Tap "Send to Car": to transmit the route to your vehicle's navigation.

Once the destination is sent, you can get into your car, and the route will appear on the vehicle's touchscreen, ready to be activated.

Looks like this works! OK, we'll try to shoot a follow up video in the next couple of weeks.

Only if you don't connect the (included) power cable to a fuse tap or OBDII port. People that are getting errors are using the factory ADAS system to power the comma system. This doesn't always work well. I have had my Comma 3x for 6 months and have had zero errors when connected to the external power source. If I let the ADAS power it, I get errors every few days. The errors clear once the vehicle sleeps or if you do a full reboot.

Take the time to connect the external power. I would worry about long term stress on the ADAS electronics when the Comma 3x is getting its power from the ADAS.
