I just got a new phone, and the transfer didn't keep my bluetooth connections for some reason. So no PaaK for the Rivian. I did my transfer at home, so no big deal. But when I went to turn in my trade-in phone, I saw several people doing their transfers in the T-Mobile store.

So...if you do that, and you used PaaK to drive there...well, you're not getting home.

This is why I always keep a key card in my wallet as a backup. I am a devoted follower of Mr. Murphy.

I did this last week- but I was also at home. The problem I ran into was that the truck would not allow the new phone be used as PAAK- and over two hours with service via telephone could not help. They ended up sending out mobile service the next day and suddenly it would allow the pairing.

I use my Watch as backup 1, and calling the wife/Rivian as backup 2. The key card lives inside the center console. I don't carry it on me.

This happened to me also. The Rivian software update applied itself last night, and today I was able to add the phone. I wonder also if there had been a system problem that affected us?

I thought that if the card was left in the vehicle, it would not lock. Maybe that only applies to PAAK. There's been couple of times that we could not lock our vehicle at a trail and it turned out that my wife left her phone in the her purse locked in the frunk. Thought it would apply to the key card too but not??

As for the watch as a backup, it requires one to have an AppleWatch AND gen 2. For those of us with gen 1, this is not an option...planned obsolescence.

Different tech. Only applies to PAAK and Keyfob. I have my phone setup as a key, but no proximity on it and I can leave the phone in the truck (and card in my wallet in the truck) and take the keyfob with me and it works great. I usually like to have two options to get back in, but if I'm close enough to home I can always come back with the second card.

Glad it worked out in the end. "Boned" has a different meaning in some places.

Gen1 with WAAK third party app on my Apple Watch works fine

Always loved the "START" command in the Tesla app - one could remotely unlock the car for someone, and then turn it on for them. That would totally solve this situation.

You've got two incorrect assumptions there. NFC cards require contact or near contact to work. I'm a little surprised you haven't tested your cards??? Make sure they work. The fob and PaaK are able to do proximity because they are powered devices, and the cards get their power inductively from the car, which is ultra short range.

Direct Rivian/Apple Watch support is only for Gen 2, however there are at least two third-party Watch apps that work on gen 1. I use Watch My Rivian and recommend it.

I lock my PaaK in the truck every single day. Her phone being in the frunk had nothing to do with your inability to lock the vehicle.
