Toyo Open Country AT III EV vs KO3 on 20”

In the spring replaced my OEM Scorpions with Toyo Open Country III EV on my quad R1T. Third time out off roading in Colorado I tore the sidewall on two tires. (Middle Fork Swan to Saint John’s in Colorado Summit County). I was aired down to 26 PSI ( I usually run 39-32 PSI).

Need tire with stronger side wall?

So do I replace the torn tires with the same Toyos?

replace just the two punctured tires with KO3s and put them on the rear. Keep the relatively new toyos on the front?

Ugh, that really sucks. I had the regular non-EV Toyos on my Tacoma and plan to buy the EV version when my Pirellis are done, but I always considered them to be on the lighter end of the AT spectrum. Never tried KOs but I would guess they might be more durable than the Toyos.

I guess it depends on how and where you use them most…

Oof, that's rough.

I guess you can run mismatched front-rear sets, but it kind of depends on your plans. Do you do a lot of off-roading? Was this a one-off where you tore through something you didn't see/expect (or a rookie move - I'm certainly guilty of plenty of those)?

If you do a lot of off-roading and don't care as much about efficiency, go for the KO2 or KO3 - they're outstanding tires off-road, great in snow, and very tough (especially in 126 load rating). There's a 275/60/20 in 119/123 as well, if you want to save some weight.

If this is a one-off, then I'd just get two additional Toyos to replace what you chewed through.

Are you talking about the Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT?

Max pressure is 44 psi cold so hopefully Rivian will allow us to set custom low pressure warning or add this tire into tire configuration settings.

You can try to see if Discount Tire can order a tire you like and if you're not happy, swap them out for something like the KO3.

Another option if you already run LT tires is trying the new Pirelli XTM AT in LT and see how they perform for your use case.

Both vendors have a special if you're looking to buy 4 tires.

Super quiet. Handle road imperfections flawlessly and smooth.

Running about 1.85-1.95 miles/kwh.

I’m shocked how quiet and smooth they are.

My other Rivians have the stock OEM Pirelli’s and there no comparison in terms of noise and smooth ride.
