My wife has decided that we need to add a 20' flagpole to our tailgating setup to make it easier for people to find us. The "mount" sits under a tire:

Has anyone used anything like this with a Rivian? I'm wondering if I should get a piece of 2x10 or 2x12 to put the flag stand on to better distribute the Rivian's weight. It's also possible (i.e. likely) that I'm overthinking it, but we'll be using it on a grass field and I don't want it tilting. I'm already planning to wrap the bottom of the flagpole in pipe insulation in case it blows or leans into the Rivian.

There are tons of hitch mount flag pole options. I’d personally just grab one of those than trying to come up with something unique .

I have hitch mounted one, I use it for an umbrella in the desert, works perfectly, and the wind doesn't blow it away.

If you go your original direction, the pipe insulation might protect from a bump, but I doubt it will prevent scratches unless the insulation and your paint are really clean. Any dirt will act as an abrasive. You are probably better off extending things enough so there is little to no chance paint and your flag pole (insulated or not) don't touch.

The problem with the hitch-mounts is that they, obviously, have to be attached to the hitch, and I don't have a receiver in the front of the R1S. This is being used for tailgating, which means I need to be able to use the rear of the R1S...

I would bolt that foot to a 3' to 4' piece of scrap lumber to keep it a bit more distance from the vehicle.

So perfect that you wrote that...I was thinking the exact same thing last night. Get a 3' piece of 2x10 and put the flag at the end. I may even bevel the sides of the 2x10 where the tire will roll onto it to make it a little easier. I'll post photos - I'm hoping that my flagpole arrives in time for Saturday's game.

It would be cool to have something that attaches to the roof crossbars. Just remember not to drive off and go under a tunnel.

I generally use a portable hole, made from a 3' section of rebar with a cut section of steel tube welded to it, that I hammer into the ground next to the truck (or at the campsite) for my poles. But obviously I'm almost never on pavement where that wouldn't (or shouldn't) work.

I totally agree - this weekend was a trial run of my Starlink Standard (which worked really well) and I just grabbed a TV from one of my daughter's desks. I learned a number of things from the trial:
  • When casting from your phone to a TV it's checking to ensure that your phone remains on the same network as the TV. My EVPlay device kept "grabbing" my phone to enable CarPlay and it took me a while to figure out why my game kept stopping. I forgot the AutoBox network and was fine after that.
  • The glare on the TV was BAD! I don't know if I need an anti-glare screen, just increase the brightness, or what. When I get a new TV (the biggest that will still sit in the R1S), that will be one of my main purchase points.
  • When you have a game on in an environment where texting barely works, you get a lot of people stopping by to check out the score...

Personally I think you are overthinking it. I have this exact mount and just ziptied a 2' pool noodle around the flag pole in one spot (make sure to get the color pool noodle that matches your team colors!) to prevent the pole from scratching the car. But in 3 years of using it, I've never seen it blow sideways enough to knock it over.
