Interesting that the Nav is mapped for Kazakhstan. I hadn't expected that.

Very best wishes, @Gregorykz!

This is a great thread. Even the language looks right on the Nav directions.

Not something I've ever looked into but does Rivian have localization settings? E.g., if you're in Canada and wanted to switch the UI to French, could you?

I believe they're still using MapBox for their mapping solution, which is more or less global.

I think it’s based on Google Maps, because it shows detailed data like business names and even the phone number of the organization — which you can then call from your phone.

It uses Google for POI, but all mapping is MapBox and OSM for now.

On my current firmware version, there’s no access to change localization settings at all. I can’t switch the language, and on the driver screen (for example, when a song is playing), Russian characters don’t even display properly.

Amazing! Keep on plugging away!
Thanks so much for the support! Unfortunately, things haven’t gone smoothly with the update. The team from Ukraine submitted a request to trigger an update, but there’s been no response so far. Meanwhile, the guys from the UAE offered to try an offline update via laptop — I’m currently working on that and really hoping it’ll work out.

The Ukrainian team also mentioned that my case is quite unique. According to them, all their vehicles imported from the U.S., even those still on 2022 firmware versions, usually update without any issues — they just have to do it in stages.

Keep us in the loop. This is great. One thing to consider is that the newer firmware versions started charging for connect plus (hotspot, sat maps and streaming) you may run into a situation where they want you to pay for premium features while also paying for sim service anyway.

If the update is only getting to "87%" there could be a problem with a particular module.

Hey,

I already have a trial version of Connect+ active until August.

As for the firmware — it’s been a really strange situation. The specialists trying to do an offline update told me that one of the modules seems to be locked. They suspect it’s due to some kind of key issue. But I’m using the original key, and the truck is nearly new, never in an accident, and no modules have been replaced or reflashed.

They mentioned this could be similar to what sometimes happens with Teslas — if the vehicle tried to update and the process failed, it can trigger a protection state that blocks further updates.

Tomorrow, the team will try to reinstall version 2023.06.02. Hopefully, that will stop the system from going into protection mode and allow us to move forward.

Also — just sharing a quick photo of my truck at the service center in case anyone’s curious 🙂

Tried working through the issues today — while attempting to reinstall the firmware, the GPS suddenly died. It still seems to show my location correctly, but the time is wrong and the navigation system now says there’s no GPS signal.

Even worse, the truck is now refusing to accept any firmware updates we try to load (even when we attempt to force the installation). This seems like an unknown issue — I’ve searched the forums and can’t find anyone with a similar problem. The technician from the UAE won’t be able to try anything until Tuesday night.

Honestly, it feels like my luck with this truck has completely run out. I have no idea what to do next.

Sorry about all of this. Ask the UAE guys if they had the vehicle in the UAE, would they have a better chance of getting it up and running?

On a side note. Kazakhstan is about as land locked as possible. I sold a car to someone in Almaty 20 years ago and they air-freighted it ($20K at the time). Did you import the car yourself, if so, what was the route it took to get to you?

The issue with the guys from the UAE is that they’re not very responsive — we agreed that he’ll try to connect remotely tomorrow night and attempt an update via the service app.

To be honest, I didn’t import the vehicle myself. I saw a listing in Moscow for a practically brand-new Rivian (only 250 km on it), rented a trailer, drove there and back, and brought it home. The truck then sat for a long time during the registration process, and during that time both 12V batteries died. It took another six months just to get replacements shipped from the U.S. I ended up buying new ones from Ohmmu. Thankfully, no high-voltage battery faults showed up.

My suspicion is that the truck might have been blocked from Rivian’s servers while it was in Russia. After spending nearly $100,000 on the vehicle and another $5,000 on registration and battery replacements, I basically got nothing in return. I’ve now spent a few thousand more trying to get the system back online.

At times it feels like this truck absolutely hates me — but I’m still pushing to get everything fixed. Hopefully, after all this, I’ll finally be able to enjoy it.

I also want to mention that this truck had a very unusual journey before it got to Russia. It was originally imported to the European Union by a businessman (whose name I can still see in the vehicle’s profile). Apparently, he couldn’t sell it there, so he took it to Belarus — there’s even a YouTube video review of my exact truck from when it was there: .

I also still have a Belarusian charging cable that came with the truck. It seems they couldn’t sell it in Belarus either, so it was brought over to Russia, where again it didn’t sell for a long time — until I came across the listing. I guess I was the only Rivian enthusiast crazy enough to go for it.

Strange they would have put different wheels on.

At that time, the truck was still on its original factory wheels. Later, I bought a separate set of wheels with off-road tires for local driving. As for the original wheels, I ended up putting winter tires on them for the cold season.

I have only one photo on this wheels
