I recognize Mr Stanfield as a fellow longtime Rivian Forum member who I typically see eye to eye with on all things Rivian. However, on this topic our experiences diverge. I find the door locks to be the worst aspect of the Rivian experience. The capacitive touch door lock was perfected maybe 20 years ago. I think I would rather have the 30 year old standard of a mechanical insertion key vs all the various Rivian options I have now.

But to your point, I don’t understand the wide variation in experiences either.
Love my Rivian, but the doors and the air vents drive me crazy.

have you always had this issue? We got our R1S last year (2024 also) and just hit the 1 year mark and it works fine on my android and my wife's iphone. Having read through other posts on this forum there have been 'hardware issues' that come across intermittently....
It's hard to say. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times it doesn't. I haven't had it consistently work or fail enough to makes heads or tails of the situation to even formulate a coherent claim to service.

Like, what do I tell them? "This works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't and when it doesn't it pisses me off, but when it does I don't even notice it"

I've had connectivity issues with the app, PaaK, and even the fob as well.. This has been present since I took delivery in June of 2024: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/from-sleep-to-coma.37751

I haven't really had a chance to test the fix deployed in .51 thoroughly since the truck has been in the body shop since I got it back from service (unrelated). You may need to remove and readd your phone to improve reliability according to the release notes, but if it's also failing with the fob like it does occasionally for me too, it could be hardware related. The service center could not reproduce my problem.

Looks like the app isn't pleased with disabled permissions. Ugh.

You have to first pair your Phone with the truck as a PaaK, and then disable Nearby Devices. This will give you all the app functions but won't trigger the truck to wakeup when close (and also disable Proximity to your PaaK from the truck just to be extra sure).

Here's how mine looks right now:

Yea, it's working just as you described. I was just commenting on the constant whining by the app to restore permissions. Wish I could turn off that alert.

oh, that, yes... I rarely scroll that portion down so I 100% ignore the whining :) Also, I have the Widget in my Homescreen so that also limits the times I actually open the app.

I feel like I'm the only person that doesn't use the app and kinda resent it being the primary way people are supposed to interface with things. Every time I am forced to deal with it for service I also get nagged about the PAAK I don't use. I don't trust it for something so critical, particularly with lots of spotty signal areas and when one bout of carelessness could see the phone dead. I carry the fob, because I still carry physical keys.

So far my only complaint with the fob is that sometimes it doesn't unlock on its own by the time I reach the door.

We were also having issues with PAAK so we ordered a keyfob, problem fixed. On your phone settings, click on Rivian and turn off the Bluetooth. That’s it. You can still lock and unlock the car on your app but it won’t automatically unlock when you approach and lock when you leave. It worked well for us, hope it works for you as well.

You realize the PaaK feature uses Bluetooth, not cellular, for proximity locking/unlocking, right? Spotty cellular connectivity is not an issue. And you do realize the fob has a battery which can also go dead without warning, right? And that the fob also works exactly the same as the phone, via Bluetooth? These statements are all applicable to Gen1, I believe Gen2 introduced UWB.

Similar except I have had fob reliability issues, so I always carry the keycard too. Fob battery life is measured in months.

Sorry OP, I can't imagine how frustrating.

My experience with 2 samsung phones since mid 2023 updates is PAAK has worked great on both R1's. There were a few times had to wait before than a few seconds when first got truck.

I have had a few issues with Mach e but it has a great backup with old school Ford keypad.

PAAK has never worked reliably for me, though usually all that’s needed is to wake my phone. Twice it has stopped working while I was driving, which was scary, but I was able to get back home and find the fob. I hate PAAK and it’s a symbol of the hubris, technofetishism, and failed execution of Rivian.

Access to G1 vehicles is shit. Idk about G2. I always carry 2 ways to get into it, often all three. Card always stays in the wallet, PAAK works based on the position of moon and fob is relatively speaking a 90s Honda. I may have to press a few times and wait 10 seconds, but it eventually gets the job done.

Am I the only one that thinks that this guy is from Boston and having trouble parking when he complains about PAAK?
