Time for new tires - what is the recommended aftermarket tire for 22"?

R1S with 22" wheels. Has everyone reached a consensus on what tires are good replacements over the stock tires? California driver....mostly city driving. Would like to be able to drive R1S offroad as well as road.

I just put the Michelin Defenders on our R1S on Christmas Eve and couldn't be happier.
We took it up to Ice house lake near us on Christmas Day and the tires handled the 6-8 inches of unplowed snow like a champ.. Way better ride in the vehicle than the original pirellis that came on it.. I'm gonna put the same exact tire on my R1t with 21's next week

All my other vehicles have Michelins including the ltx AT which isn't available for Rivian and even those are smooth to 100mph. The other cars have pilots.

LTX MS, Defender or Platinum should be on your list.

Another on mine to consider is the continental terrain contact AT as a moderate off road tire for occasional adventure. It will have a bit more protection for those 22s. I'll bet their HT is a good all weather tire.

I've had the 22 pirelli sports on some light trails and even not aired down, they got through rutted terrain and desert sand.

I put the Michelin defenders on my R1T I used to have and I would say they are close to their 50k mile rating even the way I drive. I had the 21’s on there originally and they lasted 16k miles.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 115H in 275/50R22. 70k warranty. Great ride.

I put 22” Michelin defenders on at discount tire. It’s 1700 bucks. Alignment is done by Rivian S.C. but I only needed a $100 check and not the $200 realignment. Very happy with the Michelins and how quiet they are versus Pirelli. Only got 20000 miles out of the pirelli’s which was very disappointing.
Sometime back someone figured out tire options for R1’s on this google doc. Separate tab for 20, 21, and 22s.

Do you HAVE to have the alignment done at the SC? There's about a 2 month backlog at mine, and they hold your car for 3 weeks before working on it for a day.

Alignments are typically done by tire shops, but SCs also do them. I had a local independent installer do mine here in NY.

Michelin Defenders FTW! My OEM Pirellis last 31k although probably could have squeaked out another 3k-4k miles on them but was going on a heavily-loaded road trip so got the Defenders.

As always, tirerack.com had the best deal, so had them delivered to the local Pep Boys for installation, balancing, et. al. and I've already took them back for rotating @7,500 miles for $9.99, since they come w/ a 50k mile tread warranty but if you read the fine print, you need to prove that you rotated them every 7,500 miles so I'm just letting Pep Boys do it now instead of DIY as before.

I'll echo everyone else. Michelin Defender M/S2 have been far superior to the factory pirelli tires.

21" road OEM ----> 275/60/R20 Michelin Defender M/S2.

At pretty much half the price seems like a very good deal.

For those with 22s in your time using them could you tell me your thoughts compared to the Perrelli

1) Range
2) Smoothness
3) Noise
4) Handling

Right now I keep going back and forth between these defenders and the newer Perrelli that comes on the range wheel. I’m pretty happy with the original Perrelli, getting close to 30k miles on them. Big difference between $300 and $500 for a tire though.

1) no noticeable difference w/ Pirellis
2) don't even know what you mean. it's a TRUCK. smoothness isn't even in my criteria but it does come w/ a lot more tread on it. IIRC the Pirellis start w/ 9mm or tread where as the Michelins start w/ 12.5 which is why the Michelins come w/ a 50k mile tread warranty.
3) again, it's a TRUCK. couldn't care less about the noise.
4) definitely at least as good as the Pirellis but Pirellis are known to be softer/stickier compound which is why they don't last as long but probably slightly better in launch mode.

FWIW, I've owned Pirellis and Michelins over the years across a wide variety of ICE cars and trucks and based upon my experience, I wouldn't ever buy Pirellis again since they don't last nearly as long as Michelins.

• What We Liked: Noise is well-mitigated, and it handles wet and dry surfaces with ease.
• What We'd Improve: A bit more traction never goes amiss.
• Summary: A good tire in most conditions, a reliable average without any glaring weaknesses

Continental TerrainContact H/T (Highway All-Season, 265/70R117 115T SL)

• What We Liked: If you like strong wet and dry traction, it has plenty to work with.
• What We'd Improve: A bit more cushioning over impacts wouldn't go amiss.
• Summary: It's well-rounded and capable. A stellar option for the category.

General Grabber H/T (Highway All-Season, 265/70R117 115T SL)

• What We Liked: It is controlled and capable in the wet, composed on the road, and has particularly nice steering.
• What We'd Improve: Some tweaks in hard dry handling could go a long way.
• Summary: An interesting case - it rides well and performs decently in the wet, but its dry performance felt lacking.

If traction is a priority then the Continental is the best option…
