Imagine selling an outdoor adventure vehicle where the default wheel size, with the most range, has no winter tire option. Oh noes, don’t have to imagine it, it’s screwed many people over. I, like the OP, had faith Rivian would eventually produce a winter tire for 21” rims. They’re an outdoor adventure company, right? But no, that went the way of the Dual Max Pack, camp kitchen, 12V adapters, good sound, and tank mode.

In addition to the Michelin Defender M/S2 @Lrak1973 mentioned above... You can always switch to 20" wheels, aftermarket or factory, and run 275/60R20 size tires. Then, you'll have enough foul weather all season tire options to make your head spin. Tons of existing threads on tires in that size. Tons. All of your instrumentation and range estimates will remain unaffected. Overall diameter is different by only 0.3%, well within margin of error baked into software. And, you'll probably gain a little more suppleness in ride quality in the process (more air volume).

You expect a car manufacturer to make tires?

WTF world are you living in?

Also to the OP, what mode are you driving in? If you’re in conserve all the time, that’s a reason. Other than that, you need to get your car aligned.

alignment. alignment. alignment.

I too burned through my first set of tires only to find out the factory alignment was garbage. tire wear was even, steering centered, no drift, etc but the wear was abysmal. after Rivian fixed the alignment, tire wear has improved tremendously.

Design Team is still working on them, but here’s the prototype:

From: https://www.pirelli.com/global/en-ww/road/cars/pirelli-tires-tailor-made-for-rivian-53020/

"Pirelli has developed special versions of its Scorpion Verde All Season, Scorpion Zero All Season and Scorpion All Terrain tires (Pirelli's dedicated range for SUVs and pickups) to meet Rivian's specifications."

These tires did not exist before Rivian, they're unique to Rivian, and Rivian contracted them to be made to Rivian's exact specs. So yes, Rivian "makes" tires. They did not contract any winter spec'd tires, and so none exist for the 21" (which is a wheel size unique to Rivian) which was a let down. I am now $5000 poorer for buying 20" winter rims for my R1S. They are really nice rims.

LOL if you think these are actually anything special. They’re just EV tires.

Rivian didn’t make them.

Be better.

When you're researching vehicle options before purchase and these are the tire choices available, is there any question at all that one would be fine in the snow and the other two are summer tires?

21s last 15 to 20k miles along as you don't use conserve. Mine are at 5 or more at 15k miles.
This is literally not true. I have 28k on my 21" Pirelli tires and use conserve about 60% of the time. It appears to be alignment issues or driving off road that causes premature failure on these tires.

I'd call that strange wear unless you're burning out every stoplight. What mode do you usually drive in? Conserve can be a tire killer
The vehicle has aways been in All Purpose drive and the driving is always highway driving. Very little city driving.

This is a lovely photo but when you order a vehicle online without someone to talk to and the tire options only discuss range, you don’t have the option of looking at the tread design. Rivian could easily add a line that says “Best range but no snow tire option available for these wheels”

Did you turn off auto ride height? Conserve tire wear is also well documented.it affects toe and scrubs tires. Using conserve only on the freeway isn't as bad as using it around town.

I am a 63 year old grandmother. I do not drive off road. If the alignment was off, it was off from the factory. Not my fault but now I have had to replace the 21” tires and will have to purchase new wheels and snow tires. Rivian told me it wouldn’t be a problem dealing with the tires until the loaner I was using had a 12v battery malfunction at which point, suddenly there were no options available.

Conserve tire wear is well documented for R1's that have misalignment. Properly aligned R1's can drive in conserve and all purpose in low setting with no problem. I keep the setting in Auto and have normal wear for a tire that is this soft. I used to drive a sedan with low profile soft tires and was lucky to get 30k miles.
