Hi
I currently own a model Y with 142,000 miles on it. I commute daily 180 miles, mainly in highways. I live in upper NY where it snows and there can be snow squalls when driving in the winter, highway maintenance crews can't keep up with the 1-2 feet of snow falling rapidly. My Y works but I run in to range issues in the winter. Also I am looking for a Musk alternative. I am on the wait list for R2, so another 2 years before I get my hands on it.

We do not have a local service center, nearest one is 5 hours away. How reliable are the R1Ss? I see so many negative comments and people selling their R1S due to poor construction and support.

Please be honest. Would you recommend a used R1S 2023 for my purpose? Range [need 225 miles on a single charge at temps in the low 10s], reliability and support if needed.

Thanks.

I had an R1T as my daily driver for the past two years. I need an SUV because my kid has gotten too big to ride with my two large dogs in the back for longer distances. I ordered a new R1S.

Just like any other car some of them are going to have problems and go on any car form you’ll see mostly complaints about something. So long as you have realistic expectations the R1 series will exceed them. Think it’s the cure to all life’s problems because you spend 100k you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Sorry, R1T owner here but I'll give you my $0.02 about reliability.

1) IF things go south, users are more eager to go and post online. So the percentage of users who have issues in a forum will be higher than in real life.

2) Issues are real. Rivian's issues by % is higher than other brands for obvious reasons.

3) #2 is precisely the reason why I opted for a used unit (R1T Quad Large with 4800 mi on it). I figured that some of the issues straight from the factory already happened and were corrected. I've experienced a few that I was OK with (PTC Not working, FM Radio not working -yeah, I listen to FM!- , my 12V batteries died overnight, I got a couple of RSB performed such as the half-shaft and A/C Compressor vibration, and more recently I found water under my rear carpets after a touchless carwash)

4) If you go this route and get that 2023 R1S AND you're prepared for small quirks, you should be fine.

that's my honest opinion :)

Thanks guys. Yes, R1S is too big for my needs, single driver daily commute. But I do not have an alternative than to buy another Tesla. Lucid Air is nice but no ground clearance only 4.6 inches. Frustrating that there is no alternative to Tesla and Musk.

I don't see people selling them due to service issues. The only service I've had was a mobile service to adjust the rear hatch. It's capable. With that kind of commute, a large or max battery would be good.

We're a year and 17,000 miles in and love it. We live 4 hours from our closest service center. Our other car is a Model Y with ~75,000 miles on it (which we also love).

Only problem we've had was after 8 months of ownership the rear liftgate started catching as it opened, making a nasty sound. Clearly not critical, so we timed it when we would be visiting family near service center and our service experience went very well.

I can't speak to range in the cold, given that we live in the south. I'd guess that if you're keeping your speed reasonable you'd probably be fine, but I think there's data out there on range / temps at this point.

Also keep in mind, in winter the R1S will get close to 2mi/kWh, so your efficiency will be terrible compared to the slippery Model Y (I owned a Model Y before my R1T).

180mi/day commute at 2mi/kWh is going to cost you 450kWh/week or 1,800kWh/month which is double compared to the 900kWh/month that the average US household consumes for an entire month o_O

How you considered any other EV brands, perhaps with a closer SC? Lots of good options. 5 hours is rough, regardless of brand.
Yes, unfortunately not enough range.. only options with longer range is Lucid, Rivian, then Tesla.

I test drove a R1S in Austin. While the cabin itself was quiet, the car was loud when standing outside. Which was surprising for an EV. The show room guy said something about AC was loud?

I was surprised to hear such a loud motor in an EV. Anyone else notice it?

Thanks Rob. Not a numbers guy. I dont mind extra electricity bill, just need a reliable car, with high ground clearance and decent miles in the winter, where I do not have to drive 65/mph or less to save the battery for the 180 mile trip.
