Putting in a custom order, I want the Slate Sky and Walnut Interior but it is no longer an option with Rivian Blue or Canyon Red. What is the point of a custom order if you can't get what you want? Any way around this?

The term “custom order” doesn’t mean you can get whatever you want. It never did... Ever…

Most manufacturers restrict certain color and option combinations. No way around it unless Rivian changes things around at a later time.

It was available a week ago. When I did my test drive the Guide said they did some one offs; Compass Yellow R1S way past when they were available on the website, etc.

It is what it is at the time of ordering. So go ahead and order or wait until (if) they allow the combination you want.

They need to keep the number of variables manageable.

Having placed my order in 2019 (and received in 2024) I can say the customization options are an ever moving target. Even if you order something it very well may change. If it is not available in the menu it won't be.

And they now have how many possible combinations of drivetrains and battery pack sizes? Way too many in my opinion. I can't even keep track and I am a nut for this stuff....

They limit the build options on color combinations so they do not get stuck with combinations they feel are unpopular should someone place an order and it falls through or they back out.

I bet someone on their design team decided that some combinations would not be appealing to the typical buyer and made the call that if they were produced, and someone backed out of their sale, it would be difficult to sell that combo. Rivian did the same thing with the Forest Edge (green) interiors early on: you could order FE with Compass Yellow (saw it referred to as spinach omelette), Canyon Red (Christmas), and Rivian Blue (Hawaiian island?).

There will always be people who want color combinations others consider to be less aesthetically pleasing for specific reasons: school colors, sports team colors, etc. Still, most manufacturers will limit combinations with non-neutral interior colors in case they end up having to sell the vehicle to a typical customer.

Completely agree! Clearly I took too long typing since I posted a longer version of the same thing several minutes later.

Yeah I don’t think it would look good. Again, my opinion but I’m okay their restrictions. You cannot get the slate sky blue interior with exterior red, green, or Rivian blue. Which, the only problem I’d have with that list is slate sky should be allowed with Rivian blue. Blues go with blues.

....... FE with Compass Yellow (saw it referred to as spinach omelette), Canyon Red (Christmas), and Rivian Blue (Hawaiian island?).

My 2 offered loaners were the "Omelet" and "Old Man Christmas" - only drove "Old Man Christmas" around Franklin TN.

FWIW, I can see why my R1T’s Rivian Blue and Forest Edge combo was not popular (it was a shop purchase almost 2 years ago), but to be honest it works far better than pictures suggest and I consistently still get compliments on it.

I can also see why Rivian does not allow certain color combos anymore. If they were a more established manufacturer then a combo of any available option would not be a problem but at this point they can’t get stuck with difficult to sell cars and more common color combos will have a much larger appeal.

Two options. Tell Rivian what you want and tell them you won't order until they offer it or order a silver one with the interior you want and have it wrapped whichever color you want.

Rivian did you a favor. Slate Sky doesn’t work with Red Canyon or Rivian Blue.
