This kind of “Will Rivian survive?” thread comes around every 6 months or so, usually after a drop in the share price. I suspect in a few years time someone will still be fretting over this.

Rivian are not going bust any time soon. Their brand and IP is way too strong and unique. You are not going to be left with a lawn ornament. How many times have other car companies gone bust, only to be rescued? GM, Aston Martin, TVR, Morgan …

You can live life worrying and not buy it, that’s cool, but how are you going to feel when one pulls up next to you at the lights … and then smokes you off the line ;-)

If you decide to keep it after the lease ends, are you happy with the buyout price?
Time will tell. A lease is double-edged. High buy out price means lower lease payments and vice-versa. In my case the residual, i.e., buy out price was about $47K at end of lease and my calcs showed I’d end up paying less money overall with leasing and buying out. But if resale values tank I am not going to buy out a car that is more expensive than buying it used. So I will know in about 2.5 years. The downside to leasing is I am reluctant to put a lot of accessory money in the truck, like a coating, PPF, running boards, or window film since I don’t get any return on that like if I owned and sold the vehicle myself.

BTW, after leasing my R1T and learning more I decided to invest in some stock as a more risky aspect of my portfolio. My brokerage (Schwab) had them rated an ‘F’ investment. This is a little like educated gambling at this point but I think there could be a few surprises in store. Unfortunately, I missed the bump after the VW announcement.

Hi folks,

On my way to pick up a used Rivian this week, on which I am getting a great deal. .I keep hearing concerns about the long term viability of the company. I really like the car.Should this change the decision whether to buy outright vs finance vs leasing a new vehicle?

I heard VW might buy them out in the long term. Thoughts on this? Thanks
I have several vehicles and my go-to is the Rivian. I can’t predict the future but I love the SUV. My true test is if it disappeared tomorrow would I replace it, the answer is yes.

Sounds like you've been spending too much time on Facebook. Every Rivian ad that pops up there's a million trolls who comment "junk" or "out of business soon". They've been saying the same thing for two years, and so far haven't gone out of business yet. You can tell who's never driven one of these vehicles, or even sat in one.

Then the funny thing was, I started getting ads for Hyundai EV's on my news feed and saw the exact same copy-paste troll comments. Often from the exact same accounts. Imo it's bots or oil industry shills, trolls who just hate all EV's, or stock short-sellers. What's even more interesting is when you click on some of the profiles who are commenting all this nonsense and see a message about "this profile has been hacked".

Regardless, it's very frustrating to see so much - literally - outright lies and mis-information posted all over the place on some sites. ? But you're doing the right thing by coming here and talking to actual owners. Personally love my Rivian, drive it daily for work since March of '23. Huge improvement over my three previous Chevy trucks, and I have no concern over the long-term viability of the company once more people get to experience the vehicles. Good luck with your decision!

You're in a Rivian owners forum with Rivian owners and investors....what do you think?

I would be concerned if they can't resolve a couple of issues soon. They want to build a new plant, but the state won't issue permits until Rivian is in good standing with the UAW. Rivian's CEO is, like Musk, anti-union, so they have a problem there. Then, the 2024 presidential election could have a significant impact on the entire EV market as the Republicans want to cut back severely on the sales of EVs and promote fossil fuel production, which would further impact Rivian's viability. Kind of between a rock and hard place.

Tesla had very different financial times. Very low interest rates and everyone was enjoying nearly free money. Now even Tesla is suffering as people stop buying 70 to 100 K vehicles when it’s 5 or 7%
Not exactly accurate. Tesla has lower sales and is responding with price cuts, but EV sales are up overall (~7% in the USA) due in large part to other entrants in the market such as Kia/Hyundai with very competitive products (features and/or price).

I agree with you about the trolls. Seems like anything new or different gets those trolls. I think there's legitimate concerns, but I think they can be addressed. I'm not an owner, but interested in Rivian. I am an owner of Teslas and have seen the same trolling and misinformation over the years. We all need to support the EV industry and Rivian is not an unimportant part of that.

So let me get this straight... You're worried, but you're on your way to pick one up regardless? This is logical?

I'll tell you why you're worried: You haven't done any research. You haven't been paying attention to the company's progress or news/analysis written about the company. The reason you are worried is because you haven't done anything to help yourself to be informed and out of the dark. Instead of relying on volumes written by those in the know... You chose to pay attention to sewing circle hearsay from god-knows-who. And despite all that, you're throwing money into the unknown. That's why you're worried. You're worried about your [lack of] action. You're not worried if Rivian will stick around.

If you've done your research and read the actual news articles... VW is not buying Rivian. Instead, VW is so lost with their EV development that they are investing in, and starting a joint venture with, Rivian—to get themselves back on track. VW, a car company with roots in the 1930s, getting help from Rivian (for $5B). Pause and think about that. Then, ask yourself which company is in trouble? It's not Rivian. And Rivian is on-track to posting positive revenue by this Q4. That's pretty fast for a new car company that just started deliveries at end of '21.
